Rent paid in cash?

Hi everyone,
I'm renting a flat for 6 weeks and the landlord has asked if I can make the payment in cash, which makes me uncomfortable as we are talking about a few thousands pounds.
Is this normal? If so, how can I make sure this is a secure transaction and I get some sort of proof of purchase?
Not 100% this thread goes here sorry if it doesn't.
Thanks

PM a board guide to get this moved to the Housing board as per post #2 above.
Presumably you have a contract (AST/lease) for the rental? As it's such a short term let then I'm not sure if protected deposits still apply.0 -
No different to a shop asking for cash - just ask for a receipt, and if you're really worried leave your phone recording audio of the handover conversation.
It's not normal, but cash is still a valid payment method so there's nothing per se to worry about. Just most things these days are electronic transfer.0 -
I would also make sure you draw out the EXACT amount from your account so you have some sort of evidence you can point to if neededIf I ruled the world.......0

So the landlord is dodging paying tax. Anything else he's dodging paying for, such as gas and electricity safety checks? And if you're mugged between the cash machine and the flat, you'll be paying twice.
Give him a cheque, and if he doesn't like it that's his problem.0 -

And the Op's!
A cheque, I'd have a huge problem with that total PITA!0 -
Sounds a bit dodgy to me but nothing wrong with it, debit, credit cards, cheques arent legal tender in the UK and only cash is0
-
I wondered how long it would take for someone to mention the completely irrelevant concept of 'legal tender'.0
-
Even bank transfer is safer than cash (from the "avoiding getting mugged and proving a payment was made" perspective). Certainly looks like the landlord trying to avoid a financial audit trail.0
