If you are reasonably technically minded - i.e. can read a manual without freaking, you can download pidgin - and follow the instructions here then you don't need admin privs.
Shh, fingers crossed but for now the computer at home is playing again :j :j
I checked my work email to check up on a reply about admin privileges and was told that my audit from 2 years ago means that they'll let me keep admin rights (I saved IT about 50 hours work - or an hour's IT expertise each week). I don't think I'm going to tell them that the department has srunk by 75% and that way I'll keep admin rights and can just download a new version of MSN:p!
