Chicken pox abroad

Hi everyone. We’re on holiday in Greece and on the first day my son has come up in spots that are (yet confirmed) chicken pox. We are insured and have flown with tui (who won’t allow flight back until 7 days after last new spot has appeared). My question is about insurance and accommodation, it’s likely my husband will need to stay here while I fly home with our baby. Does the insurance have any obligation to keep us in the same hotel / can we pay the difference? And given that we will have spent the whole time in the room do we Gget any compensation for a ruined time? Thank you in anticipation for any advice. Appreciate we are lucky it’s not more serious!

The answers depend entirely on what is included in your insurance policy: your insurer is the only one who can answer your questions.

You want compensation because your child became ill due to something totally unrelated to the holiday?

How is it the fault of TUI? Pull the other one.

You would not get any compensation for something that is not their fault.

I don't think that the OP is saying that TUI is responsible or is asking for compensation. The question is connected with travel insurance which may or may not cover the extra expenses they will incur in this situation. Lots of things that are unexpected are nobody's fault.

    Erm, yes she did:
do we Gget [sic] any compensation for a ruined time

"Compensation" is very different to asking for out of pocket expenses, and/or bills for extra accommodation.

They clearly ask if they can get compensation for ruined time

Compensation for your child getting chicken pox??

It's the risk you take when you go abroad with little ones.

OP - chicken pox may be infectious for 2 days before the first spots appear (but was your son feverish or off sorts when you boarded the aircraft?), so he could have spread the virus all round the 'plane.

I would keep your head down in case TUI try to sue you for infecting their passengers !

Definitely not asking Tui to do anything as no-one’s fault. No symptoms prior to flight or would not have considered boarding plane, wouldn’t want to put anyone else through this. Have looked at insurance documents but not clear what their obligations are legally (if any) on moving accommodation: will check out with them. Have taken every precaution not to pass on and not left room since first spot appeared. Thanks everyone for your help.

We were in Ibiza some years ago when a young child of a couple in our hotel contracted Chicken Pox.

It is a notifiable infectious disease and the medical authorities will not permit air travel within the given time frame.

The father had to get back to work, so went back on their package return flight and she stayed in the hotel with the boy until given the all clear to fly, which was around 5 days or so.

Thomsons (as was) organised the mum and son's homeward flight

They had to claim from their insurance, and I believe there was no problem. I doubt if any compensation was paid other than the necessary additional hotel and board expenses, and the doctor's fees.

We felt really sorry for the youngster - he could not be around other kids, including using the childrens swimming pool.
