*Any company that designs and builds a phone can use Android’s mobile operating system because of its open source nature*
So this implies that Huawei could still install updates of Android even on their later models. Am I missing something??
Evening Standard: Huawei Google ban news: What does the Google block mean for Huawei phone owners?.

yes android IS open sorse , however playstore and other google progs are not
Huawei will not get the latest patches , and indeed the latest operating systems sent to them by google , they will have to get them , themselves from the open sorse pool, , often several mths later
at present google hand over updates and fixes directly to phone makers and assist in checking compatability
this will not happen now0 -
The entire saga of Huawei has been blown out of all proportion, it's already been documented they will get updates, just not Android major updates (ie Android 8 to 9 for example), but will get them all for Android 8 as and when Huawei deploys them.
The Huawei phones are not going to become bricks overnight and stop working, though to read some of the media reports implies this is what's going to happen.0 -

Correct, and it's not like we needed yet another thread on this to add to the, at least, two already going.0 -

They’d still get major updates as well, but would only get the major update when google release the public open source code, and not in advance so as to be able to test the betas on their hardware.
So eg 8 to 9 would still happen, but with a bigger delay than at present.====0 -
Yeah I agree. In fact we shouldn't have different forums OR threads. We should just have one single huge thread and call it, errrrrr "Stuff" so that people can waste most of their life wading through it to find something of interest. I wondered what nonsense you were talking again so sadly I looked You're right of course, we should have a million threads all discussing exactly the same thing. Chris for brainiac of the year :rotfl:
I can't remember why I put you on ignore in the first place but looking at this thread I can guess. I won't make that mistake again. Bye.0 -
A phone these days (especially smart phone) is useless without Google apps like YouTube and GMail. For me anyway.0

The Gmail app is pretty mediocre, there are better apps for email out there (Aqua, as an example).====0 -

I don't think you understand. I don't care is the app is mediocre or not, I've been using GMail as my email provider since 2004 and I'm not just going to dump it because of Huawei. What an absurd reply.0 -

You do realise a Gmail account doesn't need the Gmail app to be accessed. The Aqua app supports Gmail accounts so you wouldn't need to change your email provider.
The point they are making is that other apps can be better than the Gmail app.0
