If you didn't leave things on good terms then why on earth are you concerned about the implications for her. Grow a pair and cancel the DD.

Even if they had left on good terms, just by the ex allowing this DD continue, does not say much about her anyway.
In fact, I would be inclined to not say anything to her and let the chips fall at her feet. It would serve her right for being such a dishonest person.
  • Send her a text to say you will be cancelling DD after next payment, and give her a month.
    More than sufficient.

Where does this assumption of dishonesty come from? I can't help but think you're projecting your own issues here.

Have you considered that the ex might not have even considered how the tax is being paid? The car is taxed. No letters have arrived from the DVLA. So it looks like there's nothing to be sorted out.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Cancel it today, let ex know from Saturday 1st June she needs to tax it, no payment from June yourself then.

Are you as dumb as the ex. If I had my tax being paid and I know for a fact that I was not paying it, then I would surely want to know where the money from coming from to pay the tax because guess what nothing in life is FREE.
I could see this standing up in court :" Your Honour, I was not paying the tax and I had no idea how it was being paid. It did not dawn on me to find out how and who was paying this tax, because guess what that was one less bill I had to worry about, irrespective of my dishonesty.
It's call having integrity and it seems both the ex and you do not know the meaning of the word.

So you never forget anything at all following a bitter split from a partner that you were living with? It must be nice being so perfect. What polish do you use to keep your halo so shiny?

The fair thing to do is to warn the ex. If they don't respond, no worries about the aftermath at all.

Might it be something as simple as the split up was recent and the ex previously paid car tax as a yearly lump sum? Hence they might have assumed it was all paid up up front for the year? (there is no clarification either way or when the annual charge is deemed to have started).

Darkslider, simply message your ex to say that they need to sort their road tax out to start from the 1st of June as you are cancelling their direct debit and leave it like that, keep it simple.

Yes it might be a shock (at this short notice) but that is car ownership for you, something could break / you are involved in an accident the next time you pull out of the drive.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.
  • Well done to the OP for being a decent human being.

After months with no contact I received a mildly unpleasant message out of the blue today, which gave me the kick up the bum to state my intentions to stop the car tax and another bill (phone and broadband) coming out of my account. The car has actually gone now so I don't know who's been benefiting from my taxing it there, and I've filled out the account holder change form for the broadband so I'm going to post that and I've said next month's payment will be the last I make, so it should all be fairly painless from my end.

Thanks for all your help anyway guys, positive and negative, it's all quite correct! I know I'm too nice natured and I let people take advantage of me too often, but at least after this I'll have an extra £40 to service my debt each month!
  • Err...

If the cars gone from her surely it's been reregistered to the new owner which would stop your dd anyway?.
