Am I able to claim? Advice needed

Hello all,
Yesterday I was supposed to depart at 11:40 from Tenerife with Ryan Air. The flight was delayed and none of the staff could say what time it would be but was roughly 4pm. Each time I asked they gave me a copy of my rights.
I was checked in and luggage was in hold.
Another passenger also not getting anywhere stated he managed to get an earlier flight with Thomas cook. So I asked the desk about this and they said “Yes, you can book with someone else then claim compensation” I asked if they would be prepared to move us to another flight and they said no.
We waited till 1.15 pm and then booked tickets for a 2.40 flight with Thomas cook as Ryan air still couldn’t say when the flight was expected.
I am now reading I’m not entitled to any compensation as I was not actually on the flight, although the only reason this is, is because I went out of my own way to pay for earlier flights (needed to get back due to dogs and having a holiday in the UK booked for my birthday)
I have received 2 emails from Ryan Air. 1 saying I can have a refund for my flight because the delay was so long. 2nd email apologising for the delay and a letter of proof that my original flight was going to have me landed 5 hours and 20 mins late. (They’ve stated it’s for use if I want to make an insurance claim).
Can anyone suggest some advice please?
If I use Ryan airs online tool, it says “you didn’t fly on this flight, check the name”

Hi,
Others have previously commented that if you answer 'no' to that question it dismisses your claim and won't allow you to go any further. I would suggest that if you cannot get around that particular problem you contact the CAA PACT team and report the problem as a 'restrictive practice'
It's unclear if you qualify for re-routing costs as there is no defined time limit from which you would qualify. As a general rule it would be in the region of 24hrs. You could include this in your claim as see what Ryanair say.
You should be due a full refund of your unused flight ticket plus compensation, be prepared for a refusal for the cost of your new flight. The fact that you were not on the flight should not affect your right to compensation.
Good luck. Please read Vaubans superb guide. To find it Google and then download 'vaubans guide'.0 -
Thank you, I have this logged with them now before doing anything to see what the initial response is.
If it’s a full refund and some compensation for the delay and trouble we had I’d be happy with that. Will report back when I hear from them.0 -
This is one case where I would be hesitant to take the refund since it potentially complicates the compensation case. Personally I would push the rerouting line where the compensation entitlement is more clear-cut.0

Thank you for your reply.
Due to me going off on my own and booking another flight as they would not reroute us. I didn’t want to sit round for 5 hours waiting for the original flight.
Would this fall under compensation for this?. I haven’t accepted any refund of anything yet. Still waiting on a response currently.

Yes, you were due compensation after 3 hours. Please read Vaubans superb guide. To find it Google and then download 'vaubans guide'.0 -
I have received the below response.
Should i also be requesting for a refund on the flight that i didn't board? As i can see the below is for the compensation, but should i also be entitle to a refund on the flight?
Thanks,

Reply to them stating, that also under 261, you are due a full refund for the flight you did not take and that you do not consider the matter closed yet. Please read Vaubans superb guide. To find it Google and then download 'vaubans guide'.0 -
