Lane hogging has become epidemic

A 3 lane motorway basically has got a lorry lane, a car lane and a criminal lane.
This is what I assume a lot of lane hoggers think.
No point in using the 'slow lane' as that's just for lorries and the fast lane isn't for me because I don't want to go fast.
So the middle lane is where I'll stay.0 -
It will be interesting to see what happens when all cars are fitted with auto speed control and the most any car can do is the legal limit....0

Sorry but that's just silly. Most of the time, in the real world, the motorways are so busy that you are continuiously overtaking lorries, and they hardly leave any space between themselves even if you wanted to pull back in...so you have to pass another lorry, and another and another. At some point your exit comes up, and it gets really hairy!!!
Call us "lane hoggers" if you like, but there is no way that I'm putting myself at risk of being the filling in an HGV sandwich, just to jump out of your way.
Anyway, has anyone been able to answer the earlier question of "How big does the gap need to be between Lorries, to enable you to SAFELY return to lane 1?".
I'm betting it's much larger than you think!! As it should really be Your safe stopping distance to the vehicle in front + the safe stopping distance of the HGV behind. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

This isn't lane hogging - this is overtaking a line of lorries in lane 1.
Lane hogging is when the left lane is clear but you can't be bothered to move into it.Anyway, has anyone been able to answer the earlier question of "How big does the gap need to be between Lorries, to enable you to SAFELY return to lane 1?".
This is for you to judge. You should only enter lane 1 again when you decide it is safe for you to do so. The person who best knows your driving ability and reactions is you.
I'm talking about lane hoggers. People who sit there for mile after mile with no intention of moving over, oblivious to what's going on around them, even though the left-most lane is totally clear while a queue of traffic overtakes them.
If you drive a Prius, there's a very good chance you do this.0 -
What do think I should do, lower my speed so some impatient idiot who doesn't understand the highway code can break the law, or speed up and break the law myself?Overtaking someone at 2 mph. The idiot is not the person you are blocking.
I know who the idiot is. I will drive at 70 and if it takes ages to overtake someone doing 69.9 mph, then it takes ages.
There's some countries I wouldn't do it in as there are aggressive tailgaters, but in the UK people are generally law abiding, and it doesn't actually happen very often these days. Even most of those who want to exceed the speed limit seem to have respect for those who don't, and hang back at a reasonable distance. But you do get the occasional idiot...0 -
..as per the above, although I don't do it I don't see any problem in stopping in the middle lane at the legal limit of 70mph? (assuming you can find a motorway that is not congested...)0

It's bad driving, against the highway code, just like speeding is. I don't speed nor middle lane hog, it would be hypocrisy to criticise speeding while middle lane hogging or vv. So don't do either!..as per the above, although I don't do it I don't see any problem in stopping in the middle lane at the legal limit of 70mph? (assuming you can find a motorway that is not congested...)
But there do seem to be a lot of hypocrites who complain about one bad form of driving, like lane hogging, while condoning other forms of bad driving, like speeding.0 -
Three drivers all convinced they know best. One driving at 70 with minor variations, one letting cruise control think for them and one wanting to go a bit faster. If people incapable of maintaining a constant speed used cruise control it'd reduce lane hogging.
I set mine to 70 on the motorway (actual 70, not speedo 70) and often while overtaking someone doing 68, their speed will edge up to 70 or close to, or even a bit above, and it'll take ages to complete the overtake and be far enough ahead to pull in safely - meanwhile some impatient idiot behind who wants to speed will be tailgating and flashing their lights...0
