Is overtaking on the inside not illegal in the UK? I thought it was.

Undertaking is illegal but moving faster than the lane to your right is not.

In my view moving to the left to pass a vehicle then moving back to the right is undertaking. Someone sitting in a lane 1 doing 70mph whilst someone in 2nd lane is doing 50mph is not undertaking.

My lane is simply moving faster than the lane to the right. I wouldnt cut that vehicle to overtake something in the left lane though. I would overtake them on the right in a block.

What does that mean? Cruise control causes lane hogging? Cruise control is the solution to stopping lane hogging? Cruise Control is your favourite film?
If people incapable of maintaining a constant speed used cruise control it'd reduce lane hogging.

I set mine to 70 on the motorway (actual 70, not speedo 70) and often while overtaking someone doing 68, their speed will edge up to 70 or close to, or even a bit above, and it'll take ages to complete the overtake and be far enough ahead to pull in safely - meanwhile some impatient idiot behind who wants to speed will be tailgating and flashing their lights...

Not exactly - it's not a specific offence, though can be taken as an example of driving without due care and attention, as can lane hogging itself, which again is not a specific offence.

I suspect there are a number of people who pick a lane, set a speed on cruise control and stay there until they see their exit - oblivious to half of what's around them.

I'm not sure if it would avoid lane hogging - but I know what you mean about people not maintaining a roughly constant speed. I might have CC set at 68 or 73 and find myself overhauling someone; move out to overtake and 2 minutes later they are overhauling me and overtaking and 2 minutes after that I'm overhauling them again....
I need to think of something new here...

Not specifically. The Highway Code advises against it, and anyone caught doing it might be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention, but there is no specific offence of overtaking to the left.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

    Correct in the first instance.

What lane would they pick and be able to stay in it? Lane 1 - they'd have to set it at 50. Lane 2 - same as bound to encounter overtaking lorries, unless the motorway is empty, in which case I don't see why anyone would get wound up about "hogging" the middle lane, unless they're very highly strung. Lane 3? Whatever speed, they'll either have to slow down or they'll get tailgaters flashing them or get undertaken.

Yes and it's not so much them that are the PITA but the knock on effect on the impatient t*t who wants to do 80 or 90 getting delayed by me taking ages to overtake the variable speed car in the middle lane.

I have found it much better on the smart motorway sections with speed cameras.

Undertaking is perfectly safe and legal in the United States where I lived for five years. I really don't understand why it is frowned on here, though arguably it is not, in itself, illegal. I do it quite often these days.

That would be the USA where in 2017 the annual road death toll was over 37,000 compared to 1700 in the UK? And it isn't even because the US is a larger country and they travel more distance. The UK has 5 road deaths per billion vehicle miles travelled compared to 11.6 per billion vehicle miles travelled in the USA.

A 3 lane motorway basically has got a lorry lane, a car lane and a criminal lane.

Overtaking someone at 2 mph. The idiot is not the person you are blocking.
