Wrong and wrong. Caught once (36 in 30 limit) in 44 years of driving. Speed course attended. Never had points. Agree with some of your other points, but not about the notion of the definition of a criminal.

If you break a criminal law then you are a criminal. The offence is spent after a specific period of time. Speeding is a criminal offence, offenders are therefore criminals. Your opinion differs, but facts trump opinions of those that follow the principle of Freemen of the Land.

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin, anyway?

So you have broken the law in the past (probably many times), and been caught doing it. And so have I. Quite a few times.

However, exceeding the speed limit isn't a recordable offence - and that's really about the only definition of "criminal" that makes much practical difference. So, no, you do not have a criminal record as a result of the offences you've been caught red-handed for. Nor do I.

Put on your big boy pants and take it like a man - you drove like an idiot and got caught.
Sometimes we do stupid things, part of being a grown up (perhaps?) is taking the rap for your mistakes.

Totally agree. People who push the rules should take the punishment when they get caught.

May does not infer an obligation, rather a choice. :)

If you mean 'imply' rather than 'infer', then you're right. However, it is the SoS who has a choice, not the DVLA. He has exercised that choice by setting out criteria which the DVLA are obliged to apply.

Just wondering how one shrugs off the likes of post #59. Guess it's best just to ignore it.

Erm ... post #59 was mine:

Ah yes. Sorry about that. The post I was referring to is (now) at #57. Either posts have been deleted or I got the wrong number.

Yes, great idea. Your two year old child is desperate for the toilet so you think you'll stop in the layby for him.

And then when in that layby and your child is out of the car, another vehicle comes into the same layby and is unable to stop in time because they were speeding and ploughs into your child.

I bet you would have then wished that the police did more to catch speeding drivers.

Yes, I've seen one of those - Bishop Burton near Hull. They should get out an do some real policing, and stop belly-aching about how they need extra funds.
They are doing real policing, the vans are manned by civvies or police doing overtime.

Perhaps if people didn't drive like !!!!!s then there would be no need for traffic police. Only today we've had our bypass closed by yet another pair of holidaymakers incapable of driving down a road without running into each other and we'll get that happening at least once a week until the end of September.

I just wish there were a few more patrol cars out and about nabbing the uselessly inept, as well as speeders.
Driving on dual carriageway today for about 25 miles, I had umpteen of those !!!!!s cut in far too close and without indicating.
And no I wasn't driving like a granny either, mostly just keeping up with the traffic in the left lane. I wasn't in a hurry.
