Huawei phones going forward
Hi all.
Report in the press that Google will not be allowing huawei phones access to updates of android, or access to play store, meaning that apps can't be updated. What, if any rights do we have as consumers? I'm still under contract with this phone, and am concerned about security going forward, and (slightly) about its future resale value.
Any thoughts?

User will be phoning interneting texting through a network that already has a lot of huawei kit installed .
Your contract will be for network access not the phone .0 -
Going forward, it's going to be difficult for the British consumer to justify £800 for a phone or a long contract on one, that won't have full access to everything Google and Android.
Apparently current Huawei models will continue to receive patches but no major new release of Android. New models won't even be able to use the Play store without a side-loading workaround. Many details need clarifying.0 -
I agree, this is quite a mess.
After hanging onto my Samsung phone for years and years, I literally bought a Huawei P30 on Friday last week (no contract) !!! I cannot believe that this has happened.
My understanding is that once the new Google Android platform (Android Q) is rolled out, even existing Huawei devices will no longer be supported by Google which means no security updates and no access to Google apps such as Google Play store, Gmail, Chrome, YouTube, calendar, maps etc to name but a few !
I have literally just spend £329 to buy a phone that will work for about 6 months (or whenever the new Android platform is rolled out) and will then effectively be a brick as all the main apps / functionality that everyday consumers use are owned and supported by Google.
Surely there has to be some sort of consumer law that protects us against something like this ? We as consumers are innocent in this and bought or took out our contracts in good faith and when these changes come into effect, our phones will no longer be fit for purpose as a lot of functionality will be lost !0 -
It only affect future release phone, not existing.
But the next question is if they install kirinOS in their future phone, will you buy it.
And they have few hardware rely on US tech company, and if they could get around it.0 -

This is not correct, Google have stated that when their new Android platform is rolled out, no Huawei phone will get the update, effectively rendering all Google apps useless. Our phones will keep working until the new platform is released and then no more !!0 -
Not quite true. Many devices do not get the latest OS update and continue working for many years.river_storm wrote: ».......... no Huawei phone will get the update, effectively rendering all Google apps useless. Our phones will keep working until the new platform is released and then no more !!0 -

which bit of my post is not correct?
Did I mention existing Huawei phone will have new google android OS?
I just saying google play will still available.
By the way Google twitter confirmed Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on existing Huawei device.0 -
Yes - basically your £900 phone will work in the same way as a £50 wangtech one - so it will work but will get no OS updates or anything interesting.
So for example (unless this is resolved) - you will get no Android Q or anything like that.0 -
