Appearances, as they say, can be deceptive.

When you check the terms and conditions and find out that you have signed up to auto-renew you'll know why they tried to take payment. No fraud involved.

Do you really think that a company operating in an industry as tightly regulated as insurance could wilfully commit fraud?
This is an exceptionally naive view.

My opinion is open to being changed and I am therefore more than happy to be provided with your evidence that proves that to be the case.

The FOS have issued guidance on renewal notices and their expectations. It must be in the main part of the letter as to what happens next. i.e. if you want to cancel, do you need to tell them. Most firms comply with regulatory requirements and what the FOS expect.

So, the comments about swindling are incorrect. it is a failure by the OP to read the documentation sent at renewal. However, as already mentioned, they will usually waive it if there is evidence of other insurance in existence from the same date.

Nothing to offer? I'll stick with my point of view then.
