    Anyone remember mini-discs?!

I still have all my DATs (all transferred to multiple SSDs) and a working portable player, but no longer my Revox and 10in reel tapes! Seems absolutely incredible to me that we have a resurgence of film cameras, vinyl, and (the lowest of lo-fi) cassette tape among youngsters....

Interesting thread. But I'm not going out to buy lego or indeed anything else!! The trick, as others have said, with buying this sort of thing for investment is to know what might be sought after in x years and then to recognise when x years are up and sell on the high. Both (what to buy and when to sell) are difficult - often impossible - things to judge.

The world is full of people who've bought stuff to sell when it's valuable only to find it never becomes valuable - I'm one of them (gave it up though, many years ago - my dad collected too, have got loads of his tat still, unsaleable!). There are always those who were successful, but I'd suggest they are a small minority. And for most of that minority I'd say it's luck rather than judgement.

The really valuable collectables of tomorrow are the things it never occurs to anyone to collect today.

Thanks for the feedback. I think it would be best to buy into a small selection of modern desirable sets and then offer them on ebay at a premium once retired and unavailable. That way there is a chance to make a quick buck from people that just missed out or wait for circa 20 years for today's children to become adult collectors. The skill will be picking those that look most fun so that many people would be desperate to play and own.

So a hybrid of trading and investment. Although the danger is that the investments are just the ones that don't sell!

Bought quite a few "Unexpected Gathering" and "Pirate Ship Ambush" sets for about £25 to £30 at Asda and Toys R us a few years back just before they were retired.

Brand new now selling for over £100 on ebay.

I bought some of the scooby doo sets 2 years back and they have increased in value so far. An example would be the mystery machine that cost me £25 now selling for £50-£60 on eBay.

It’s all about buying the right sets I would say, everyone is buying the Star Wars sets but to me they are not worth it due to everyone buying them to sell on.

Out of interest, how would you intend to go about insuring lego (if your house burnt down) and you happened to have a valuable set?

I'm 24 and my Dad bought me a crazy amount of Lego when I was growing up in the 90s/early 00s. He kept all of the boxes and instructions thinking that they might be worth something one day, looking at eBay and BrickLink seems there could be a couple of grand there, assuming they all sold.

Currently my small city-centre flat is bursting at the seams with all the boxes full of Lego, and my ottoman bed is has another hoard underneath it (which fortunately my girlfriend appreciates minus the question of why haven't we played with it yet?).

I already invest in stocks and am doing well in that sense. A couple of grand versus giving away my childhood memories doesn't seem like a good trade off for me. I'd much rather keep it and enjoy watching my dad's grandchildren play with them - at least it might keep them off a screen (or maybe hologram by that point).

On the finance point I agree you're best off investing in low-cost tracker funds, such as Vanguard. My dad's best friend however has a good amateur business trading antiques on eBay.

I have been doing technical analysis on some of the recent ebay sold/unsold and available prices and my stockpile of recently discontinued Lego sets has nicely increased in value. Maybe time to sell some and rebalance into S&S?
