Not meaning any offence, but without spending money on the insurance you might develop the tendency to be more careful in general..?

    Option (2) Purchase second handset
    1. I will pay £150 now.
    2. The phone is brand new in box. with manufacturer 2yr warranty
    3. I can store it safely at home.
Is it not easier to store £150 at home or in a bank?
    4. It will be the exact same model.
Why does it have to be exactly the same?
    5. No need to try and decide or learn anything new.
Not much to learn really if it's the same OS.
    8. I am in complete control and don't have to deal with insurers.
And it would be the same if you just had money - like insurers have.
And it's only £150 to pay in order to avoid all that hassle. The phone will probably still retail for around £60-£100 new in three years time
£60 - maybe. Plus the hassle of selling it - something that you wanted to avoid.

Non taken and I hope you don't either because that is illogical and dangerous thinking, or else insurance wouldn't exist. It's also a kin to saying that humans are exempt from error.

    Thanks

I don't think so that you need to get insurance for your mobile. It can cost around the same to replace your handset. I will recommend you do some more research on it and get some cheap insurance if you really want to get it.

    Hi Harry,

The insurance was the cheapest I could find at £43pa.

    Grumbler.

    1. No because money just depreciates or sits in the bank barely doing anyway.
    2. I don't want to have to learn anything new and it will make using it a breeze if I have to.
    3. £60 is the lower end of the figure and I wouldn't have any issues with selling it BNIB if I wanted to.

    Factor in -
    1. The time that it would take me to find a similar model?
    2. Issues with grades, i.e mechanical, cosmetic conditions?
    3. Returns etc..

I have just spent days if not weeks messing around with sellers trying to get a replacement phone and most of the ones that I received had issues. i.e Non UK spec, limited warranty etc...

I have also had to deal with sourcing them and returning them.

How many hours did that take me?
Insurance would cost £129 over 3 yrs (possible waste)
The same phone to buy now would only cost me £150.
I have an asset in the phone.
I can just swap over of sell the phone when I want.

So it's only £150 for a bit of peace of mind.

    Option (2)

    1. You pay £150 now
    2. You need it in 2 years time, no longer any warranty and you've now got a phone that's at least 2 years out of date.
    3. You never actually need it - Waste of £100 or so.

    1. Not an issue.
    2. The phone wouldn't be two years out of date once updated. It may not be the lastest phone but most people today are going around with phones that are older than two years lol :rotfl:
    3. It would still have a value of around £100.

Considering the current phone I have only cost me £60 in the first place, to pay £43 "insurance" is foolhardy.

If it was a top end phone that cost like £600 or something ridiculous then it may be something to look at, but otherwise... mobile phones particularly at the cheaper end of the market are so sophisticated now and pretty much as good in most areas as the more expensive phones (costs tend to be skimped on the quality of the camera, the quality of the screen and on occasion the bundling a few apps that you may or may not want).

    OP.

One quick question. Why have you asked for opinions when you come across as having clearly made up your mind that option 2 suits you best?

As an aside my view would be option 3. Don't insure and just buy a new phone if it gets broken/damaged.

    1. No because money just depreciates or sits in the bank barely doing anyway.
A phone, even BNIB, depreciates MUCH faster.
    1. The time that it would take me to find a similar model?
5 minutes. A little more if you want to spend time on finding the cheapest option.
    2. Issues with grades, i.e mechanical, cosmetic conditions?
Are we not talking about new? And even if it isn't produced any more and nobody sells new, this means that the phone is already obsolete and it's hardly worth buying it.
I have an asset in the phone.
Good that you don't call it an 'investment'. Mobile phones lose value so fast, that I wouldn't call them 'asset'.
So it's only £150 for a bit of peace of mind.
    OK. Each to their own.

It seems you made up your mind before posting so I can only assume you're looking for validation.

As for your thinking, you must be expecting to damage or lose the phone quickly if you're happy with a two year warranty on the spare phone which you won't need until you do.

Crazy logic; you must be extremely careless.

    Far from it.

I'm extremely careful and £150 is a small price to pay in context to what I have stated further above in the other replies.

Accidents and theft are a part of like whether you like it or not or else insurance would't exist. :rotfl:

I have been on the receiving end of it and
#1 It is costly and time consuming.
#2 I work in IT and we preempt.
#3 We spend on things that may not be necessary right now but are there in the event of a disaster in order to minimise any risk to you. i.e downtime etc...

You have to look at it from all angles.
    # Insurance premiums.
    # What you will get in return for your money from the insurers.
    # Cost to yourself in time and money.
    # Are you just better off buying a standby.

    A standby would -
    Get me an asset.
    Give me peace of mind.
Save me hours of my own time dealing with insurers and sellers.
    Only cost me £150.
I could still sell the device for £100 in 2 years time.
