Cancelled Car Insurance - Need Help

Guys,

Me and my wife (as named driver) have been insured with Adrian Flux for our mini. I actually have 2 policies with them. A bit of history -

My old mini which I sold last month which was insured with adrian flux. When I called them to cancel, they suggested that since the policy is ending in 3 months, why don't I just keep it and that way I can avail an additional year NCB. I agreed and they added a dummy registration against the policy and the lady said that this is normal.
I also insured by new mini with Adrian so I had 2 policy running with them (Ageas underwriter).

Got a call from them today and the lady said that they are cancelling my policy and I have until tonight to go with someone else. When I asked for a reason, they said that the underwriters do regular checks and I failed the check which means they cannot cover both policies. This was a shock as I understand that there are huge implications for when someone cancels your insurance.
I am not sure what triggered this and Adrian Flux are not providing further info.

I have been looking at home insurance recently with gocompare and confused.com and its possible that I have have entered slightly different info. For e.g. I work as BA/Systems analyst and my searches on confused were with BA and on gocompare as Systems analyst. Do you think this could be the reason? Surely they cannot cancel for such a small difference or should have asked for more details.

I am extremely stressed as no idea what to do? This will be extremely annoying for when I want to take future insurances and just feels like a kick in the wrong place when I have not really done anything wrong. People false claim all the time and get away with it and I have my insurance cancelled for no apparent reason.

I also called Ageas but they will not discuss anything with me as I did not have an insurance with them directly.

What can I do here? Do I have any rights? Can I make a complaint or ask for further info? Is there a possibility for me to get this reverted?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Vish

Whenever you are not happy with your insurance company/agent the route to go down is a complaint in line with their complaints procedure

Then if you are not happy with the reply or they ignore you for 8 weeks you can escalate to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you

Do you have anything in writing about keeping a car with a dummy reg on cover to get an extra years NCD?

    (Irregular or what??)

You can't keep cover going on a car you don't own or have it running against a dummy reg number.

I tried to suspend mine as I returned a car I had purchased a few hours before and they said it wasn't possible, I ended up buying another car a few days later and started a new policy with them.

Your best bet is to lodge a complaint quickly and also hope you have a sympathetic insurer who you can get cover with.

I don't have anything in writing but I will check again. And I will write to their complaints department. Thanks a lot.

But if your car is written off most insurers allow you a reasonable time to buy a replacement and continue the same policy. What if you sell your old car before buying the next one? Most people just transfer from the old to the new once they have the new car.

I know write offs allow time to get a replacement car, but the insurance company or the uplift company have the damaged car.

If you sell your old car and don't replace it straight away the insurance has to get cancelled. Most people have their bold car, buy the replacement then transfer the insurance over, therefore no break in cover.

So if I understand correctly, the agent suggesting that I keep the insurance on the old car going for remaining months and adding a dummy reg could have led to something being flagged on the insurance's systems. I am not saying that is 100% the case but most likely what the agent did was not the norm and could potentially be illegal too.

I agree with Quentin, make a complaint to the FOS (After you raise it with your insurer)

They'll ask for call recordings, and all your case files, and you can be relatively certain that if you were advised you could do something which is (literally) illegal, they'll put it right for you one way or another.

They may not be able to get Adrian flux to issue you the full years NCB, as technically that doesn't exist. But they'll more than likely get flux to bridge the gap between what you are being charged for a new policy with your current NCB, and what you 'would have' paid with the extra full years NCB

I had a similar situation last year. I scrapped my car with less than 3 months left on the insurance policy. I was not in a position to purchase another vehicle immediately but would be buying one before the policy ended. My insurance company said the same as OP and left the policy running and noted the vehicle on he policy had been scrapped. They did not put a ‘dummy’ on the policy. As it turned out I didn’t get a car until two months after the policy ended. When the policy ended the insurance company wrote to me saying it was ending and included confirmation of my no claims.

There were no problems or issues at all. Might the policy being cancelled have something to do with the dummy reg? I’d raise official complaint as others have suggested.

I would write to the chief executive of Flux for an explanation. If they refuse to address this it will not do your case with the ombudsman any harm but will more than likely get it looked at by someone who can resolve such a simple matter
I don't doubt that their call center are unable to see the reasons.
