Thank you all for your replies. Really appreciate it.

Quick update. I spoke to an Adrian Flux customer service who is looking into this now. They did resend me an email which was sent to me around the time I agreed with that option of putting the car on the dummy reg. So they said that this is not illegal and some brokers do provide this. In any case I have an email from them that they have done this and It also has a dummy reg which is registered with DVLA as dummy reg. He also says that he can see why the policy was cancelled but he cannot provide me further details. He says that he can confirm that the policy was not cancelled due to having the car on dummy reg. Anyways I kept pushing and they are going to talk to the underwriter Ageas today and see what additional info they can provide. I have told them that unless i get the details of why they cancelled this, I am going to financial ombudsman. Its like putting me behind bars without any explanation. This is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life so I need to know why this was done.

I have also asked them to look into why the cancellation letter sent to me states that "based on my request" we have cancelled the policy. They cancelled this and I had no hand in this so I would like to know what is happening.

    Thanks once again.

    All,

Finally some result based on input from you guys.

As I mentioned, I asked Adrian Flux to investigate further and I received a call from a lady in their complaints handling team and basically she said that "due to an error on our part you unfortunately did not meet the relevant underwriting criteria and as such we should not have incepted this insurance policy. we can confirm that you would not be required to inform any future insurer of having a policy cancelled".
    I have above in writing.

So basically they messed up and I had anxiety for past few days and had to run around looking for a new insurance. Such a mess. They did apologise and refunded me some of their admin and cancellation charges.
They could have looked into this in detail in the first place and their agents should not have told me that I will have to declare this cancellation when they cancelled this last Friday. Not sure if I should pursue this further with them/financial ombudman or leave things to avoid further aggravation.

Thanks for all your help on this. Really appreciate this.

Assuming you now you had your response to your proper "complaint" as you are not happy you can escalate to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you

I would love to do that. But just seems like more hassle. I would love them to be held accountable so that they are more careful next time as if I had not pursed further and taken their word, they would have got away with this.Lets see. I will keep the group updated.

If ive understood everything correctly, haven't you lost out on a year of your NCB? This is definitely something worth asking the FOS to look into in my opinion

For anyone else reading putting your car insurance on a so-called 'dummy' registration number is a terrible, terrible idea and I can't believe a reputable broker would suggest this. Every single insurer would cancel your policy if they were aware you'd done this.

If the so called 'dummy' registration was actually in use somewhere then they could be held liable for any third party claims arising on it.

I did. But if I had cancelled my policy of the old car a month ago when I sold it instead of putting the car on a dummy reg, I would have lost this anyways. Because I bought the new car first and then setup a new insurance on this, when I sold the old car, I had option to cancel insurance on that or put on dummy reg and I opted for latter as I had no idea this was not normal. I really want to do something about this but find it all very stressful.

Well if you put it like that, your in the exact same position you would've been in anyway because of your own actions, so its unlikely you'll receive any financial redress

As far as a complaint goes, you could probably raise the complaint to the FOS for the horrendous mis-advise you were given, and maybe they'd think your owed a bit of cash for the stress. Chances are whoever gave you the advise would get a serious telling off behind closed doors too

Thanks. I agree that I can pursue on the mishandling of the case. When they cancelled, they told me that I will have to declare to all insurers going forward. This caused me a lot of stress for couple of days. Also, everything regarding dummy reg seems dodgy as per comments here. So definitely something i can pursue on. lets see. thanks for evryones input. Felt good that people are ready to help without no benefit to them.
