£285 Property Damaged During P&O Cruise

    OP I think you're going to struggle.

    The appliances are 2 years old, their current value would be low and it is not clear cut if anyone is at fault. Wrapping the cord round something is probably more the norm than not, even if the manufacturer advises against it.

    You've had £50 and 2 bath robes- whilst unfortunate you've lost both items at the same time that doesn't seem too out of line for 2 year old hair items.

    Why do you care who’s “held to account”? It’s not a serious matter. As long as you get some recompense (and you’ve already had some), that’s good enough.

    You’re taking this way too seriously. Finding broken hair appliances very distressing and wanting to hold someone to account for it? No one was hurt.

    Thanks for your perspective - I'm frustrated as now out of pocket by fairly large amount in my books, I'm not in a position to be able to just throw this kind of money away, and looks like there isn't much hope to recoup this.

    If it is an issue caused by their power supply or voltage somehow, I also really feel they should be made aware so they can amend their pre-boarding information and not advise people that this type of appliance is fine to bring on board. To some this may be a non-issue but we all value different things and unfortunately for me it has been frustrating.

    If the products were of such poor quality that they fail after (once) having the flex wrapped around them then arguably the OP may have rights against the retailer under the CRA. But with similar problems about evidence and the economics of pursuing it. I can't see the cruise company have really done anything wrong, if you left peculiarly flimsy items out for the housekeeper to tidy away.

    Doubt you'll get anywhere with travel insurers - what risk is relevant here, and how much is the excess anyway?

    Like I said above, I think you'd be best just to replace the flex.

    Well then they're not worth £285 then.

    It's up to you to prove that they've been damaged as a result of negligence on behalf of P&O. In fact any remedy you seek will require you to get evidence of what caused the fault in the first place.

    I doubt it's anything to do with their power supply or voltage. If it was, they'd have a catalogue of problems from passengers with all sorts of appliances being damaged. If it was a power problem that just happened to be a problem that only affected your two appliances, the onus is on you to prove that, and to do so you're going to have to employ the services of a technician to examine the items and determine the cause if the failures, at your cost. P&O aren't going to amend their travel advice based on your hunch.

    I really can't see this being worth the trouble or expense. I understand that they were expensive items to buy, but you've had two years' use from them so their current value is minimal and probably covered by the £50 and bath robes you've been given.

    On ebay used products equivalent to the curling tongs are going for at least £90, the straighteners were limited platinum edition, have hardly been used, and similar pairs are going for £100 +.     I have had more than one happy outcomes from sending out of warranty items back to the manufacturer expressing my disappointment with the failure and asking for their comments
    A power drill ( at least 5 years old) and a shower valve ( at least 10 years old) and a LCD TV panel spring to mind all fixed or spare parts supplied FOC
    Also out of warranty waterpump 65% contribution on our car
    I doubt your travel insurance will be interested however

    You made it look like you just bought them. As they are over 2 years old I doubt you will get the outcome you want.

    I'd say that they went simultaneously may just be bad luck, maybe from being bounced around a bit in bags etc. My experience of GHDs (especially straighteners), is they have a pretty limited lifespan anyway. The wife won't use any other brand for her insanely curly hair, but due to the daily use they rarely make 3 years.

    I hear older ones fair better, possibly as they get more and more powerful the lifespan gets worse.
