£285 Property Damaged During P&O Cruise

So your cruise was last year and you now want to claim for damage?
However if they were purchased 2017 and you cruised in April 2018 the warranty was still valid.0 -

If you are still getting lights coming on then it isnt the mains cables that are the problem.0
-
First, get the damage assessed by an expert (who may be able to repair cheaply anyway)
Second, "This is obviously very distressing" means you need to get some perspective. An ill pet is very distressing. An ill hair straightener is inconvenient at worst.0 -
After two years of use it will be difficult to show that the damage was due to one incident.
Whilst they may cost over £200 to replace, you can't expect new for old after two years. In reality they are worth a few quid and I'd accept what was already offered.
Would have accepted that perhaps if it was just the one appliance, but for two separate appliances to break in the exact same way during 2/3 days I find it difficult to believe it has nothing to do with using them on the ship.
On ebay used products equivalent to the curling tongs are going for at least £90, the straighteners were limited platinum edition, have hardly been used, and similar pairs are going for £100 +. So for me to be in same or similar position I was before going away I will have to spend around £200 at least
Looks like my best bet may be to pursue a claim on our travel insurance? Frustrating as P&O aren't held to account at all this way.0 -
You could argue that with curling tongs and straighteners both damaged, the OP is already back in the position they were in before they purchased them!0

Thanks for some practical advice probably a good step to take, neither myself or my partner have claimed on travel insurance before but guessing this may be a part of this process anyway?
Agreed distressing was probably not the best way to put it - extremely frustrating may be a more fitting description!0 -

You’re taking this way too seriously. Finding broken hair appliances very distressing and wanting to hold someone to account for it? No one was hurt.0 -

It could still be the cables at fault.
If the cables are damaged with only a couple of strands still intact then this will cause a very large rise in the resistance of the cable and which can severely limit the current that the appliances can draw from the mains.
This would stop the heaters from working but the indicator lights (probably LEDs) only require a tiny bit of current to operate so they may well still light up.
The same fault can happen if the cables have been pulled as this can loosen a solder joint or other form of wire termination.
This sort of fault is something that I come across at work on a fairly regular basis due to corroded wires stopping electrical systems from working correctly.
However, it is very unlikely (but still possible) for it to happen to both appliances at the same time.0
