May I just take this opportunity to say that I have not really sought any advice in this thread.

I have provided my advice to the OP who can decide for themselves whether or not to take it.

Perhaps if others spent as much time & effort being nice to other moneysavers and offering them the advice when they seek it, as a small number appear to do attempting to belittle others who venture to offer such advice, this site may once again be of the use it was when MSE Martin originally set it up. :)

Why? They all paid less than the big six and once they were transferred to (I think) Co-Op energy they were free to shop around for the cheapest supplier again.

I don't even shop around myself now, I have a company do it for me on my behalf, it really couldn't be easier-

Fair enough, if that suits you :)

I'm sure as a 'Deliciously Dedicated Diehard MoneySaving Devotee', you will already be aware of what MSE themselves say about such sites. But to assist anyone who has not read the article...
... if you're the kind of person that's likely to switch and then forget about it, it could be a good option.

    What to watch out for

There's a few things to watch out for when using automatic switching firms.

For example, these services usually can't offer all deals on the market – only those which they can switch you to. If they don't have a relationship with a supplier, they won't be able to move you to one of that supplier's tariffs, so you could miss out on certain cheaper deals.

They also tend to be limited in the preferences you can set, meaning you can't adjust the minimum savings that you'll switch for, or choose only to move to providers with decent service.

Most also base any savings on your projected costs for the next 12 months. This method assumes you'll roll onto your provider's standard tariff if the deal you're currently on ends in the next year.

For example, if you've six months left on a fix, your projected costs for the next 12 months will include the remaining six months on your current deal, and six months on your provider's standard tariff, which is usually much more expensive.

Comparing this way, rather than just against the rates you're currently paying, means auto switching could actually switch you from a cheaper fix to a more expensive deal.

I got billed £1100 for 3 months from EDF.
Me and my partner live in a 1 bedroom flat both working full time hardly ever home. How is it even possible?

    The Op asked a question.

They have not received yet an answer that will help.

Everyone now is arguing about the BIG 6 sounds like an Agatha Christie's Poirot plot or cheap is best?

Well I have had Gb energy, Iresa, and Eversmart and I do not care about anything as long as the price beats all the rest.

    So Bla, Bla, Bla,

The OP has got answers to help - read the meters, check the previous bills and make sure that they are all accurate. We could also add that it would be a good idea to make sure that the bills and meter serial numbers correspond and that they are the meters that feed the OPs flat and not someone elses

Without knowing whether they are correctly based on actual readings from the correct meters rather than estimates then there is no other advice that can be given at this stage.

All the rubbish spouted by Benight is just confusing the issue and is no help whatsoever

From the OP's post, it's hard to comprehend how "not being with the big 6" could in any way be the cause of the massive bill. As others have said, meter misreading, lack or reading or maybe faulty meter are all likely culprits.

I too have a life-long committment to not using npower and immediately change supplier if I am unfortunate enough to find them as the supplier at a property I move to. When you initiate a switch they start the begging calls and it's very satisfying to point out that even if they paid me, I would not be their customer.

The OP posted at 11:47am yesterday and hasn't logged in since, so obviously not that concerned!!
  • So has it been established if there is a big difference between the units used on the bill compared to the actual meter readings?

Esther I do encourage you to come back to the forum. You may be embarrassed having found a basic mistake but one of the benefits of the forum is that we do learn from mistakes - I've been there due to over reading a meter (twice!)
