The OP poster has a smart meter, so even if they moved, they could still check what they were using, compared to what they were paying.

I am no genious with money, got myself into a mess many a time. However, you do not need anything fancy to ensure your direct debits are meeting your usage.

The OP was saying that prepay was costing more than direct debit. If their instant it may be, but in the main, direct debit costs less than prepay.

There are two things they can do, stay as they are or, if the saving is more than the exit fee, move elsewhere.

British Gas fuel is not special. It is not the Carslberg of energy. Why pay more, when it does exactly the same as mine.

The problem is the credit report and affordability of unexpected high bills/hefty direct debits. My gas price was around £12 a month more on credit mode also.while there might be cheaper suppliers the service record needs to be checked also and their track history.Prepayment is the place to be,its all topped up on line today and automatic with British Gas.At least they haven't been preaching the tackling of fuel poverty and are the same price as in some cases cheaper then ethical companies.

It apears from above that the Landis&Gyr meters won't be starting to adopt until mid december 19 lasting one year and are the last manufacturer except Secure which isn't mentioned.
