Artificial Grass - The wrong measurements were taken

Hi all

A couple years ago I had someone come round to do a quote for artificial grass. The quote was for around £2,000. A couple years later, I asked if the quote was still valid and he replied yes. I also asked if he would need to take another look and he responded no, as long as we have not done anything to change the size of the garden,

Installation day and the fitters come in and start digging up the grass. Halfway through they think they are going to be a little short but continue until the grass arrives. The garden is divided into two separate grass patches so the first half is done but it turns out what they needed was 40m2 of grass where the initial measurement was 30m2.

Contacted the franchise owner and he's telling me that as he quoted for 30m2 of grass, I need to pay for rest.

Is he in the right about this?

Seems fair enough? No. If you need 40sqm just pay the extra. Personally I would try and push for a good will on the installation of the extra 10sqm

Put the shoe on the other foot.

    Can you do maths?

If the quote actually says 30 square metres, then that's what they quoted for. They'd be paying you to do 40.

True, but now I'm in a situation where half my grass is done and the other is dug up. Because of a salary miscalculation, I had to take out credit to pay for the thing and now it's in limbo.

The quote breaks down the removal of grass, weed membrane and laying of grass in the rare garden. If I was to put myself in the other person's shoes, then I will cut my losses as the tradesman and get the work fitted at the agreed price. This is simply down to a mismeaurement by the franchise owner.

If the company came out and measured it but got it wrong then it is completely down to them to cover the costs.

Please may i dip in here and just ask something (as i am planning on artificial grass for my front garden in the next year) ?
You haven't mentioned the digging out and removal of the spoil/ground beneath the existing grass - or did you mean that too ?

The quotes i got all included the removal of however much (can't remember now) ground beneath the grass area.
This added to the length of time the job took aswell as the cost.

    Sorry for butting in.

    |You asked if a quote was still valid a couple of years after it was given?

What does the quote say about how much was needed?

Well you would say that, wouldn't you. I'm sure the fitter would say that if he were in your shoes, he'd understand that mistakes happen and you'd compromise on the price.

We're all a bit in the dark because you've been a bit vague on the "quote" details. Was it a quote or an estimate? What exact measurements/area were listed? Was the price broken down per square metre or given as a binding quote for the full area? Is there anything on it about final amounts being subject to variance based on area, etc etc.

You may very well be completely right and the fitter has made a mistake and you can hold him to his quote. If that's the case and he doesn't want to play ball, getting him to finish the job for no more money is another matter.

    Thanks all

The quote was for the fitting of grass in the rear garden area. Total measurement 30m2.

It includes the removal of grass, digging up of soil, weed membrane, sand, laying of grass and removal of waste. It was a quote and the tasks weren't broken down per square metre. No if, buts or maybes apart from not being responsible for damage to hidden pipes and cables that haven't been disclosed.
