Advice Required - Student Flat Utilities Bill

Options
Hi all,

First post so please be kind!

A few years ago I rented a flat with some friends while at university. We set up a joint account to pay our electricity bill. I did not spend much time in the flat due to ill health so I moved back in to my parents permanently and trusted my flatmates to divide the remaining rent/electricity bills between them. This didn't happen and the electricity bill went unpaid. I paid my cut of the balance but the account wasn't closed and I am unsure my flatmates even informed the company we had moved out. I started to get emails and phone calls from debt collectors which continued for about two years. These have since ceased.

I've recently began to recover from my ill health and I've been trying to rectify my financial situation. The energy account is not on my credit report as I have always been registered at my parents address. I therefore cant see if the account has been closed/defaulted/or if a CCJ has been issued on it. I would phone up and pay whatever they wanted to in order to make things right and put my mind at rest, but I'm scared it'll leave me with a black mark on my file for the next six years.

I would appreciate any advice here. Thank you!

  • If your name was on it and the energy company reports to the CRA’s you would see it on your files.

Have you checked all 3 reports?
  • I've checked everything!

Contact the company and sort it directly with them.

I don't think energy companies ever report to credit agencies? Chances of a CCJ are so minuscule. I don't often recommend this but honestly in this instance I would just walk away. Head held high. You won't hear about this again I don't think. You have done all the right things.

    British Gas do.
Eon do as well as some others.

Most utility companies will sell on debts which then turn to CCJ's - the forum is littered with such things

Please name the company who the original debt was with.

Have you checked with all 3 below?

Even if its does go to court for a CCJ the OP will not be ruled against as they had left the property at the time of the infringement.

I would be tempted to lay low and let them find you if they need you - no point going out and looking for trouble.

Do this based on the assumption that you paid your cut and therefore you have good reason to assume they are no longer chasing you for any reason because, even if the remainder of the debt is still active and/or being chased.
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)
  • Who’s name was on the bull?
  • Hi,

It was British Gas. I've checked every report going.
