Of course they won't commit to anything without having a proper look - and that proper look is very likely to involve the work of removing the transmission. Which, if the work isn't covered by warranty/goodwill, has to be paid for.

There probably aren't internal parts available - Hyundai probably only supply the box as a complete replacement.

A diagnostic test that costs £889 - were they going to strip the whole car down to it's constituent parts?

If they were stripping down the gearbox to find out what's wrong I can see, that, you're possibly looking at a couple of days work to get the gearbox out and stripped.

I have since taken my car to an automatic gearbox specialist this afternoon to be told the is nothing at all wrong with gearbox and that it is more likely to be a drive shaft issue. Unbelievable Hyundai!! But I’m over the moon to get that news

I don't see how a driveshaft would cause 'difficulty changing up from 2nd to 3rd' but am prepared to be educated if anyone knows?

Cant see how a driveshaft issue would cause gear change issues however friend of mine worked at a BMW dealer, one day they get a X5 that wouldnt go in reverse Dealer quoted her £7k for a new box after they had "looked" at it. He spoke to the woman and said that he would buy it off her as it was and he did for £7k ,took it to a autobox specialist who fixed it for less than £250 which was a sticky valve in the valve body in the box.......................then sold it for £18k !! On your box id get the oil and filter changed and see what happens
