New Gearbox one month out of warranty

If anyone’s interested...Hyundai wouldn’t commit either way to whether a gesture of goodwill would be made towards the cost of a new gearbox until a diagnostic test, costing £889 was done. I was then told that the actual cost of fixing the gearbox issues would more likely be between £6000-£7000, instead of the guesstimate of £5000 previously mentioned.
I have since taken my car to an automatic gearbox specialist this afternoon to be told the is nothing at all wrong with gearbox and that it is more likely to be a drive shaft issue. Unbelievable Hyundai!! But I’m over the moon to get that news 0 -

Under the Consumer Rights Act you have some rights with the dealer.0 -

Under the Consumer Rights Act you have some rights with the dealer. If it was private you can only really hope that Hyundai are feeling generous.

I was about to say get a second opinion. Totally lazy diagnosis for Hyundai just to say "you need a new one" to the tune of 7k, outrageous really.
I wouldn't have a main dealer carry out the work anyway out of warranty, the workmanship never justifies the rip off labour fees in my experience.0 -
Worth a try with Hyundai I would have thought, although perhaps you should have bought a Kia and got the 7 year warranty instead of Hyundai's paltry 5!
There's a crucial difference - Hyundai's 5 year warranty is unlimited mileage, Kia's 7 is limited to 100k miles. Also, I think gearboxes wouldn't always be covered. It would depend on the cause of the fault. Wear and tear and poor technique would be excluded.0 -

After 18 months, the rights may be limited somewhat.0 -

After 18 months, I'd say the rights would be nil.0 -

It was a slightly facetious comment by me in the first place. However, the OP's car is within the 100K limit still, so if he'd bought a Kia with the same miles as the Hyundai it would be under warranty. And I'm not sure how poor technique could be proved. But you're probably right that some gearbox faults would not be covered anyway.0 -

To be fair it sounds like Hyundai wouldn't commit to a diagnosis without a detailed analysis and have given a worst case example. I would also be cautious about any alternative diagnosis of 'more likely to be' rather than 'definitely is'.
If you can get things sorted relatively cheaply then great but don't count your chickens etc etc....0
