Re the programme, - as thou the Baliffs did it for love- wonder what their appearance fee was.

    Joke this
    - can see the headlines -
Cinderalla, instead of 2 ugly sisters, we have baliff 1 and baliff 2,

Never mind the glass slipper being back b4 midnight - its already been swiped by the baliffs

Yes cinderalla you will have to go to the ball in your rags - the baliff beat the fairy godmother to the dress

ali baba and his 40 thieves, sorry ali baba and his 40 baliffs!

In all honestly I was absolutely appauled at the program, and will be making a complaint to the regulator

Except for this same bunch of cowboys, I'm sure it was the same JBW that took goods in the last bailiff style program last year, ISTR they took an old PC, a rack of CD's and a portable TV from one person.

I think there really should be an independent watchdog like the IPCC monitoring the Bailiff industry, and it be legislated that the committee of the organisation be made up of a majority of representatives from CAB, members of the public, and perhaps an MP.

They should have the power to fine a firm a % of their turnover for breaching rules.

That programme was called beat the bailiffs.

Thanks RAS - I'm just about to email Ofcom now.
Sadly Ofcom are a toothless regulator, funded by the Broadcasters, whilst I would hope that Ofcom would act, given their past form I somehow doubt it

If that is, in fact, the case - do you have any other suggestions as to who we may complain to? I am thinking of sending an email direct to the chairman of the BBC - has anyone got his name and contact details?

  • I would be inclined to complain to the BBC Trust, they are supposed to be the representatives of the licence payers, and took more robust action against the Beeb over Blue Peter fiasco and caused a number of high profile employees to leave, the controller of BBC1 for example

Does anyone know where i can get correct information on what rights i have and EXACTLY what a bailiff can and can not do, as some web sites seem to have conflicting information; such as one web site says a baliff can not enter a house where a child under the age of 12 years is present regardless if an adult is present or not and one web site says- "
if the only person present is, or appears to be, under 18 the agent must depart, but may ask when the debtor will be home. If the only persons at home are children under the age of 12, the agent must simply leave"

so im confused on that one at least and just want to know exactly where i stand so that i dont fall flat on my face should i need to confront them!!!

    Any ideas anyone?????

The National debthelpline has some good advice on there website.

To me though if you feel you are going to need to know about baliffs then you should be doing something to tackle it before it comes to that. Communication is always the key to avoid any confrontations.

Also beware there are so many people who think they know rights about baliffs you need to make sure you find the full facts out, definately not people to toy with or mess with - I prefer the preventative actions to avoid a meeting!

I couldnt agree more with you about preventing the situation but our council tax gets sent to them, we are trying to make best of our financial situation but it seems we get nowhere.
last year my Mrs answerd the door when i was at work to a bailiff who walked past her into the house and sat down in our front room as she was still closing the door.
He took a list of items in the house and threatend her that if she didnt sign his paper work right now then he would have her arrested. Having our new born son in the room at the time and feeling very scared she signed it.
As you can emagine i was so mad and complained to the bailiff company but they said it was her word against his.
And this is why i want to find out as much information as i can as we are allready in the situation of receiving a hand deliverd letter from a bailiff last week, and do not want to fall victim to a bailiff taking advantage of someone who may be too scared to ask questions and be threatend.

I know that it is our own fault for getting into this situation but as we are now here, all i can do is make sure that no one takes advantage of us, and would appreciate any advice on where i can find the full facts of what they can and can not do.
