Unfair charge to return lost dog
Comments

Your dog must still wear a collar and tag with your name and address when in a public place. So, if you had complied with the law, then your neighbour would have been able to return your dog to you. You are lucky that your dog didn’t cause an accident, because things could turn out to be a lot more expensive than £100.0

... it also seems unfair that the home, who incurred the most cost at looking after my dog, got nothing. After paying I didn’t have enough money to make a donation as intended.
...
Fear not, I'm sure the charity will understand and will still accept a donation from you next month instead, when you can afford it
Better still, enquire with the charity if they have the facility to collect payment from you via Direct Debit . then you can donate every month :T0 -

I don’t see how it cost the council £100 !?
It doesn't seem implausible to me that the total cost of running the facility, divided by the number of returned dogs (for whom payment is received) possibly comes to about £100. Maybe the other council runs it more efficiently, has economies of scale, or has decided to subsidise it.0 -

Or move boroughs?
Moot anyway as I'm guessing the OP won't be back as they're not getting much support.0 -
Where I am it's £25 statutory fine. £15 admin charge. £13.50
kennelling fee per day (and if it's a weekend you can't pick up out of hours so that's a couple of days worth). £25 repeat offender charge.
If it's picked up during the day.
If it's out of hours, there's also a £35 collection charge because they are no longer kept locally and the warden has to come from the other side of the county.
That's not so far off your £100.
There is a punitive element because although accidents do happen, there's a lot of dogs on the FB page that are always escaping and running down the highway - accident waiting to happen.
This is cheap compared to other councils in the area. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Should cost more than that to return a “crazy” dog0

No crazy dogs, just crazy owners.
Just be grateful you got the dog. Back unharmed.0 -
Where I live it's £85 for the first time plus £10 a day kennelling fees, £110 for second time plus £10 daily, £155 for third or more times plus £10 a day. That is all during working hours, it is an additional £30 if the dog is handed in or collected out of hours. Any medical expenses if they need urgent vet assessment or treatment is also added on top.
Although you don't pay the rescue directly for the care they provided the council does pay them, otherwise the rescue wouldn't do it.0
