This is true - they are all just generic card readers branded for the specific bank supplying them.
The mechanism for getting an auth code is the same regardless of the card being used0 -

Maybe, but you have to order a Nat West reader to initiate the functionality to use a card reader.0 -

I had the same issue with RBS, no prompt to order card reader UNTIL you want to make a payment!!
Ordered and then used NatWest reader after a couple of days, once computer thinks it'd been delivered!!
Daft system. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
I actually had an RBS card reader for my business accounts - and they still insisted that I order another RBS card reader for my new personal account. As others have said, just used a RBS / NatWest / Nationwide / Barclays / Co-op reader - after an annoying 24 hour delay.
The only up-side to this foolish behaviour is that you end up with a mountain of PC Motherboard backup cells ...:rotfl:0 -

NB: It's a rhetorical question...I know the answer.DOES THAT PROMPT EXIST0 -

maybe by doing some research on the account operating requirements *before * you opened the account?
I found this within 2 minutes

I don't think it unreasonable that a bank advises a customer how to operate an account up front without the customer having to trawl around the bank's website for details.
Your link just points to a list of "Common Questions". What's your point?Getting started with Online Banking? Order your card-reader
A card-reader is a security device needed by all customers looking to get the most out of their Online Banking. It works with your Online Banking service to provide an extra layer of protection against online fraud.
You will be asked to use your card-reader when completing certain tasks in Online Banking, such as:- making payments for the first time
- creating a payee
- changing your details and more

Quite.
Even if you follow the link and select the topic
"How do I make a payment using Online Banking?"
There is no mention of a card reader.
The thing that really got up my noise was that at the point that the bank tells you that you can't proceed because you don't have a card reader, there is no option to contradict them and continue.
Big-headed b'astards ...0
