Average setting is 19 deg between 7:30am and 8:00pm then down to 16 deg until 11:00 and 14 deg during the night. Gas fire in living room generally on low late afternoon until bedtime. Gas hob, combi boiler, shower is electric. Gas usage over last 12 months has been 11,400 kWh (previous year with cold winter was 12,200). I budget for around 70 kWh use per day in January and February, occasionally use a little more but most years use less. Electricity was 2,600 kWh.

70's not particularly big 3 bed detached house with d glazing, cav insulation, 275 mm in loft. Both retired so someone at home 90% of time.

No point in the heating kicking in when your not in the house or on holiday etc. When i go away i switch my combi off at the power point.

Funnily enough that's the only time I have my CH on! At about 14 with the loft hatch open to act as frost protection. My annual consumption of gas for CH and HW (all electric cooking) is a little over a 1000kWh a year as the rest of the load is taken up by the wood burner in the lounge and most water heating is actually spare PV power.

Adjusting the heat in the lounge and dining room is by judicious use of opening and closing doors and occasionally it gets a bit too warm on my sofa. I certainly don't worry about gas bills though, or electric for that matter.

My last dual bill for the worst three months received last week was for £10*.
  • Thermostats will do that
Don't set the temperature, just click the heating on for an hour when really cold.

Water is on demand hot water.

Gas bill for winter came in under £60 including the standing charge.

    With Scottish Gas.

Now that I am home during the day I have it set to 14.5 but if I get cold or have a client I amend this to 16/17 degrees. During the night it's on 11 degrees.

24C - top range of comfort
21C - recommended living room temperature
Less than 20C - death risk begins
    18C - recommended bedroom temperature
16C - resistance to respiratory diseases weakened
12C - more than two hours at this temperature raises blood pressure and increases heart attack and stroke risk
5C - Significant risk of hypothermia

Where is your thermostat situated? in a cold hall?

I can't envisage anyone tolerating living in a house with the temperature at 14.5C

    Hi Cardew

My thermostat is in the hall but I can confirm if I am moving around the temp does not feel low at 14.5. This is going by my living room temp gage too. If I am sitting in the evening it goes up to 16 and may for one hour go to 17. I have always been about 3 degrees lower than my neighbours. At night I'm under a warm duvet so no need for heating. If I get cold, I put on a higher tog value.

Using a programmable thermostat with optimum start gives you a setup that adapts throughout the year to only turn the heating on when necessary to achieve the temperature you want at the time you want it. Set it, leave it, 365 days a year.

I doubt that is the actual temperature in the living room. Most thermostats don't accurately reflect the actual room temperature especially as mentioned they are often in the hall. They may as well just have a dial from 1 to 10 & you set it to what feels comfortable for you.

I can confirm my figures are correct. My Hive tells me plus I have a thermometer in my living room. Every month BG tells me I am about 3 degrees lower than other houses. I have always been energy efficient.

Gas 11,900 kWh, down from 12,500 kWh before cavity wall/

Biggest saving was changing to LEDs Lights!

Electricity 2,900 kWh down from 3,300 prior to LED Lights!

SP April 2020, currently at £69 a month!
