what temperatures are you setting your home and what is your average gas bill

We've just had a whole central heating system replaced by a combi boiler new radiators and thermostat with 6 daily temperature settings. My question is what temperatures are you setting your home and what is your average gas bill

Mine is set at 16 during day and 17 at night.
Winter i might lower them 1 degree to 15 & 16.

3 bed semi detached and i reckon i will hit around 7000 kwh for the year. I would say thats slightly below average.
I think average household is estimated to be around 10000 kwh.

What i would say to conserve energy/money is ensure the thermostat timer is correctly set with times and temps.
No point in the heating kicking in when your not in the house or on holiday etc. When i go away i switch my combi off at the power point.

So perfectly set the timer, i would suggest lower then you think, then no harm in just hitting the temp up if you feel the evening getting a bit nippy.

However, my temps are based on my house. Very well insulated and also 4inch fire foam throughout my loft space, which is also well floor insulated and boarded out. No whistling windows but i am positioned in a bit of a wind gully (A turbine will be harnessing that energy in the coming months hopefully) and dont suffer badly at all as you can see by my energy consumption (Gas is heating only, all other appliances are electric (I have 3.2kw solar panels doing a lovely job))

One modification i would like on thermostats is a 'Teenager mode' where the thermostat will not go above 19

The amount of times ive come home and almost passed out with the heat on at 21 or 22 even!!! :cool:

20 (22 in winter) from 0800 to 2200 ; 14 at night but in practise the heat built up during the day means it doesn't drop to this.

It all depends on your lifestyle - we are a 2 OAP household and always someone at home.

Depends upon many factors now it only comes on 7am to 10 am .

Our hall stat stays mostly at 18.5 degrees - although in really cold weather, the wife and I have a tussle with it - she turns it up when I'm not looking and I turn it back down when I notice.

I'm averaging around 9600Kwh of gas per year, costing around £342 in 2017-2018, the last year I've calculated for.

The two of us live in a 4 bed semi, good loft insulation, double glazing (although we have bare gappy floors on most of the ground floor, with a ventilated 40 cm recess below). Lots of windows (13! - and I mean whole widow units, not panes). South facing rear aspect, which heats up really well in sunlight, even on cold frosty days.

We also have a wood burning stove, so our CH is rarely on after 6pm.

Edit: we have a gas hob.

I have a different system where I do not live by a set temperature or on a timer but turn my heating on and off when I feel a bit cold. The last few weeks it has not been going on until 8 pm and has not been switched on at all in the mornings. As we go into the summer months it will not be going on at all until probably October
The timers are not in use at all because I do not want it coming on in the mornings at all .I am in control, not the "nanny " timers, hence I have a pretty low usage for a quite large 3 bed bungalow.
As we could see last month with the climate all over the place , the temp hit 21 degrees in the day, so no need for any timer to be in charge. I m the boss , not a timer switch. To lower overall usage, ditch the timers altogether.
Exactly the same reason why I prefer a manual change gearbox and would nt have a silly automatic gearbox telling me when to change up or down gear

Ours is set to 19°C during the day while occupied (technically it can be 18°C when it's just me in and my wife is out but that rarely seems to happen in practice) 10°C when the house is empty and 13.5°C at night, although we have a baby, so it was set as high as 18°C at night for a lot of the last year while he was a newborn.


Last year heating and hot water was about £320 + £80 in standing charges, just under half the total energy bill for the house.

Mine is set at 21 deg C and the heating is on from 07:55 to 23:30 from about Sept to May and I used 13942 kWh of gas from 19th March 2018 to 29th March 2019.


However when the heating is off about 11 kWh a day is used for showers and hot water and cooking so the heating used 9927 kWh

I put it on between 18-22, turning it up and down as needed, from around 5pm-9pm Mon-Fri and a couple more hours extra Sat & Sun.
Down to 14 at night and when I'm out.
I'm always cold though, even with lots of layers on! I've always been that way.
I also like to take baths a few times a week.
My gas bill is around £35 a month for a one bedroom old flat - I won't compromise on warmth and baths tbh, it's one of my very few luxuries.

I just turn the heating on when I am cold. I have it at 15 when I do have it on, along with thermals and thick jumper.

Since Jan this year, I have use 2002 kWh of gas at a cost of £76. My gas will go up slightly now, as I have just installed a mixer shower and removed my electric shower, so I can add on 2 kWh a day for my shower.

The idea of a thermostat is that it looks after things automatically for you. Would you prefer to switch your oven on and off all the time when cooking a roast?
Regarding automatic gearboxes, they don't tell you when to change gear..... they just do it for you.
