My husband worked in Malta for 5 years and still goes back on business a couple of times a year. He has to hire a car and complains bitterly about the parking. True to say, he is not fond of the place.

I’ve tagged along with him and seen the sites and enjoyed sitting by a swimming pool while he’s been working so I quite like it there!

Oh dear! Some posters seem to have been to a different Malta to the one I enjoyed 2 years ago.:(

We went in October, not expecting a beach holiday, but the weather was fantastic. I agree, buy a bus pass. They go all over the island from a central bus station in Valetta, so very mse. :money:

We were there for a week and went into Valetta 3 times. The Co-Cathedral is magnificent and the Anglican one worth a visit. We took the ferry across from Sliema (as a change from the bus) and also a boat trip round the harbour. There are many museums of the various periods in history including the Knights Templar and the wartime involvement. We went to Mdina (amazing like a film set) and took a ferry to Gozo. We visited a fabulous townhouse belonging to local nobility. We just wandered by the waterside, in gardens and just generally had a great time.

Being so close, much of the food is Italian influenced and we enjoyed that.

Sounds hectic but we did find time to sit in bars and watch the world go by. :D

    Have a great time. :D

On the main street in Valetta we found there were buildings owned by various societies, but the ground floors were bars/cafes open to the public although they didn't advertise. We spent a great evening listening to the Orchestra rehearse upstairs and the prices were for locals rather than tourists.

Like PP we used the wonderful local bus service to get about having chosen to stay in Valetta as almost all routes start/end there.

the M island close to Italy is the only holiday destination that I actively looked at leaving early.
If I could have found an available flight to get me home, I would have done.

OP, if you go with very low expectations, you may have a fair holiday.

I'm not sure that it fair but I suppose it all depends on what your expectations are. If you are looking for another Ibiza or Mallorca then you have found the wrong island. I liked the fact that it was more "grown up" than other parts of the Med.

I can see that if you ended up in one of those high rise resorts with Irish bars and loud music it would be hideous. We stayed well away from that sort of thing and loved it. Malta is a big enough island to offer both.

I've never been to Ibiza or Mallorca, nor am I likely to - as for grown up, once I'm in my dotage, The M island may be appealing to me. But I'd say that there is more chance of me skiing naked down Everest than there is of me returning there whilst I've still got all of my faculties working.

But, but, but -- other people like the place and for those that do, good luck to you all. Keep going & keep enjoying it.

So if the history and architecture didn't appeal what were you hoping for?

I suppose as it's fairly flat with a mild climate then naked skiing was out of the question. ;)

  • Do not expect too much of this island.

It's OK for a weekend break, but any longer than that and you'll potentially be bored. Well I certainly was. I went for 5 days and wish I hadn't. Covered it in 3, and that was at a conservative pace.

Anyhoo, hope the weather is great for you. Let us know how you get on:cool:

I'm open to the idea that others will have a better experience than I did. :D

    Honesty update will arrive shortly......:o

Don't know how you managed to cover everything in 3 days, Gozo is one full day, Valletta another and you then couldn't see all the museums, churches etc. That leaves one day for the rest of the island, Mdina, Rabat, Mosta, Blue Grotto, Temples etc. etc.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
