Malta must do?

Off to Malta next month. We are a couple - no kids. What would you recommend we must do / see?

Hi there, Malta is a lovely place, we got married there in August 2017 (was 42 degrees on the day!) and are going back there at the end of July.

Make sure you go into Valetta and see the cannons being fired, we missed this last time and are going to make sure we see it. Also a trip to Gozo, we also went to Comino but found this disappointing, a little tiny island overrun with idiots and burger vans. But maybe it will be more palatable in May.

We are also pondering going over to Sicily for the day but we have 2 week in Malta so have the time to do so, as its a 18 hour day trip start to finish.

We went on a fair few holidays in Malta when I was a child (some 30 years ago) and it was lovely.

Now, I go regularly on business and wouldn't wish a holiday there on my worst enemy.

It's a lovely place if you like crap fried food and concrete buildings though. Its fun to drive around if you're a mad aggressive driver though. Not so much fun if you're a pedestrian..... Anywhere!

Yes, the roads are a bit mental. Suppose it depends where you are staying as to your surroundings.

From what I’ve heard and read, Malta is a bit “marmite”. I wouldn’t mind seeing Valletta though, but maybe not enough to actually go there. Never say never though.
  • What ever you do do not hire a car, as others have said local drivers are manic and parking is a nightmare.

In Valletta you must go to the Upper Barraka Gardens ( where the cannon goes off )

The Mosta Dome is another must see, you see where a German bomb came through the roof during a service.

The old capital Mdina ( a small walled city ) is another must see.

Yes Malta has changed and not for the better, everywhere there is corruption, make sure you give building sites a wide berth EU health and safety? No chance.

Gozo is a must as well.

Research local bus services before you go and you will see most places are accessible by bus.

If you want a sandy beach the only decent sized one is at Melleiha not far from the Gozo ferry.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

Do you visit foreign building sites while on holiday?!

I would recommend buying a 7-day bus pass as it's incredibly easy to traverse the whole island by bus. We enjoyed visiting St Pauls catacombs in Rabat, and wandering around Mdina (though very touristy). There's the classic car museum in Qawra which hosts cars, motorcycles and memorabilia, and Sunday /weekday evening classic car meets. And there's plenty to see in Valletta.

Malta is one giant building site, you can't avoid them if you walk on pavements.

I agree - don't even think about hiring a car. The bus service is excellent and the weekly pass just allows you to hop and and off at random.

the M island close to Italy is the only holiday destination that I actively looked at leaving early.
If I could have found an available flight to get me home, I would have done.

OP, if you go with very low expectations, you may have a fair holiday.
