    Seconded- the employee who processes the return is as far removed from being responsible for issuing the repayment as it is possible to be. Even when I worked there this was paramount. A lot of unreasoned pub gossip guesswork and speculation on this thread.

    No offence intended. I spoke to HMRC on the agent line this morning. The only difference this year is the sheer volume of applications at this time - ‘completely inundated’ was the phrase used. This has been massively compounded by the huge increase in calls requesting progress updates from genuinely concerned taxpayers who are in need of the money which further slows matters. It’s going to take longer this year- those are the facts.
