It depends arsenalbarnie whether you're in a round with your 'friends' at the pub and how upfront you want to be with them about your cutting down. Personally I'd have G&T with slimline and intersperse with straight tonic. The need for weightloss could then be your 'excuse'. Just a thought.:)

Fortunately I never have the urge to drink during the day.

Same here andy. I just got into a habit of rewarding myself with a drink after a long day at work. I'd just walk in the door and open a bottle while I was getting supper. Even now I enjoy the drinking while cooking more than having it with a meal. My aim was just to become a 'normal' social drinker rather than an every day habit. I choose to drink at weekends but not on 'ordinary' weekdays at home (exceptions are holidays and occasions). For me it seems to be all about something to look forward to. But just as loveasale said, we're all different. :)

I'm claiming my first smiley today.:D

    Welcome andy :hello:

I am a 'cutter-down' and this thread has certainly helped - I feel much more 'accountable' having to declare on here.

Like Maman - I had got in to the habit of opening a bottle of wine to share with my OH when we got home from work but now I save that for weekends and special occasions :)

    6/12 for today please Shaggy

Bought some of this yesterday while in M & S

£2.50 - which seems an ok price. Put it on the wine rack for an occasion.

    They were also selling

But at £26 it seems like more of a treat-treat than a treat iyswim. Might treat-treat myself Easter weekend.....They have other flavours. Anybody tried it?

Shaggy, I've had my eye on Seedlip for ages, because it is aimed at people who want a cocktail-style non-alcoholic drink with real flavour and substance, as opposed to the sort of sweet fruity "mocktails" that bars otherwise tend to sell, but I have not tried it, due to the price - I haven't wanted to buy a whole bottle without testing it in case I don't like it and I haven't got round to walking into a bar to order a Seedlip-based drink either. There's also more than one Seedlip flavour, which confuses the issue. I would like to try it though, because you can use it as the base for martini and g&t style drinks, which I like the idea of. If you test it, let us know what you think! :)

hi Andy! I can relate to feeling lousy, I certainly was before I joined this thead, and it has really helped me cut down, in fact I think it is a lifesaver, so I hope you find it works for you too :)

Welcome, Andy! If you're concerned that you might be putting yourself at risk by giving up completely then as Shaggy says, it's a very good idea to see your GP to discuss it. Only you know how much you drink and if you are scrupulously honest with the GP you will get great advice, I'm sure. If you don't want it on your medical record, do some internet research, but please make sure you only use trustworthy websites when making the choices.

I stopped overnight and my withdrawal manifested itself as intense tiredness and poor sleep. The worst was over in a fortnight, but it was pretty intense while it lasted. OH and I used to think nothing of polishing off a bottle a night, and often opened a second one. I'd binge drink with friends on a very regular basis, and I would binge drink fairly frequently just because. Stopping was tough to begin with and a huge relief after three months. Best decision I ever made. It can be done but if you have any doubts, seek the best advice that you can get.

Love a Sale, it sounds as though you really want the house, have to move and recognise it will be tight financially. Is there a particular area of your life (like booze) that you can cut down the costs to make up the difference? That would be a win:win!

Arsenal Barnie, that question is the Holy Grail of this thread, really. For at least a year before I stopped I used to dread going out with friends because I knew I'd get drunk and I didn't really want to live like that any more but didn't know how to break the habit. I tried everything I could think of, but I don't think you're asking about giving up so I'm the one person who can't make it easy for you. I honestly swear by AF beer, any brand now when I'm out, but Bec*s Bl*e at home - it makes shopping easier, no other reason. They all taste fine to me.

And all AF wine tastes vile to me, no exceptions. I had an AF G&T the other night at a Bill's; fine, but it just tasted of tonic. Very, very expensive tonic! Shan't bother with any of that again.

    10/30 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.
