Giving up/ Cutting Down Alcohol Thread Part 16

  • Calling today, 25/30 thank you.

Will definitely be AF today because...I have made it. Tomorrow will be 6 months exactly to the day since I last had any alcohol whatsoever. I thought when I set my target that it might have been too ambitious but honestly, it has just got easier with the passage of time and I could quite happily continue on with it (but for the fact that I have committed to some social things coming up and I have said I will join in with a drink).

Just a few thoughts on the last six months in case this is of interest to anyone else considering a long dry spell:

I definitely have an ‘all or nothing’ streak and personally I find it easier to just go without something altogether, rather than moderate its use.

I didn’t avoid social events but did become more choosy about what I said yes to, depending on the circs. It was much less of an issue to say at a work do, for example, right at the start of the evening that I’m not drinking at the moment, nobody made an issue of it. But I had to say no when a pal asked me to go to a beer festival because that would have just made for a difficult evening.

Physically there are benefits, it has been much easier to keep the weight off and in general I just feel sharper. Had a health check recently and blood pressure, BMI, cardio checks etc were all ‘in the green’. I know that not all health issues are linked to alcohol and that complete teetotallers can still get ill, but for me, I just feel like it has got to help in the long-term.

This thread definitely, definitely helps. Someone posted just the other day how much it helps them and I agree 100%. Being able to post up an AF weekend or a run of school nights or any longer periods just seems to matter. So, thank you very much shaggydoo and cathybird, it really is appreciated.

Not sure where I go from here. Last year I did 3 months in a row AF, this year has been 6, maybe the goal for next year is 9 months?

Good luck to everyone with your targets. Honestly I drank too much, for too long, and if I can change then 100% you can too.
  • Season of mist , I am so very inspired by your story ,
6 months is amazing to be AF , getting over the pressure to drink from others is something I thing I’d have ,,, a lot of my friends enjoy a drink , but unlike me can take it or leave it , I’m greedy and drink until I self destruct!
    Well don you x
:money: I will never be rich but I'm happy :rotfl:

    Hello
    I'm on 20/18 now.
Thankfully the tumour in my ovary was benign, so no need for any further treatment. A huge relief as I'm sure you'll appreciate.

That's amazing news annie. Delighted for you.:j

Very many congratulations seasons of mist. 6 MONTHS is awesome!!:T

    Happy Weekend Everyone!
What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.
