    Dealers dont "own" the cars generally until they are in stock six months then they can generally return them or pay for them.

    It would be extremely rare for a dealer to have paid for a brand new car, have it for six months then sell it at a loss.

    Something would be going very badly wrong for that to happen. A dealer may feign "selling a car at a loss" but the reality is they are making the profit on hitting a volume bonus, so its only a paper loss not an actual one.

    There may be exceptions to that but in general discounts bottom out because they'd otherwise be losing money is why some cars you can only get 10% off across any broker, rather than because there is some price fixing.

    Was going to get one myself but was doing too many miles so stuck with a 120d M Sport instead. Still sort of regret it, considering the M140i would've been around the same price.

    If you're doing biggish miles and its any reassurance that you've done the right thing, we're getting 28.9mpg in the M140i....

    I think it will loosen up and maybe we'll get early 30's on average but thats going to be as good as it gets. :o

    We dont do big miles so its not a particular issue.

    My son had a 120d M Sport - a great car! They respond well to a tuning box and we got his from 177BHP to around 220BHP. Lookup Bluespark or Racechip tuning boxes. It make a big difference to them, particularly given yours would be a higher BHP in the first place.

    I'm probably preaching to the converted here but although the car will only ask for a service every 18K+ miles, get an oil and filter change done half way between. They are still prone to premature chain failure and for the sake of £100 a year...

    Our Cooper S is chain driven too and i got it serviced there at 9K miles. The M140i will be getting that regime too.

    Maybe not such an issue if you plan on just running it under warranty and moving on though.

    In practice any vendor will not sell at a price they aren't happy with, courses aside.

    It's a shame the forum isn't mobile compatible. Another of its failings.

    About 10 years ago a friend who ran a peugeot dealership told me they were given discounts for volume selling.


    He then said if they reached target +1 then restospective discounts would apply to all sales that sales period.


    So if he reached target then he could effectivley sell a car for £0 and still profit.

    And how do you know what the dealer contract says?

    You're just splitting hairs, anyway the manufacturer can't set a minimum price, end of.

    As Car54 says there are plenty of documented cases.

    Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.
    Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience?

    Why? So you can argue with them?

    Which simply reinforces my point that if prices for a particular car bottom out at say, 12% off, its because for a dealer to sell it for less they will be taking a loss.

    Shifting volume is not the aim of a car dealership, making profit is.
