Brexit - how it will change UK's future?

Options
Other Brexit threads are mostly fight between Leavers and Remainers, each group accusing other why "I am right and you are wrong". If half of country believes in an ideology it is worth investigating why they think so (rather than just saying - you are stupid).

Let's have a different perspective here. Whether you are like or dislike Brexit, please think what effect it will have in UK's future political/social/economic landscape.

My hypotheses is that it has proven how inept our MPs are. In fact, I feel UK's parlimentary democracy only works with 2-party system where one party got majority.

The referendum has sliced both Labour and Conservative horizontally. Both groups have strong Leave/Remain supporters. So, Brexit can potentially split both main parties.

If 2nd referendum happens, whatever be the result, it will set a precedence for 3rd/4th/5th/nth referendum every few years as people can change mind.

I feel we need Proportional Representation system (and a referendum for that). There was one for Alternate Voting (which is NOT same as PR) in the past which was lost in favour of FPTP. But I think most people didn't realize what AV is and result could be different if same referendum happens now.

The way MPs are behaving now UK looks like banana republic.

People hate changes but it is the only constant in life.

Note for mods: Created new thread since other thread is mostly fighting between Leavers and Remainers. If you feel otherwise, please merge with other thread. Thanks.

With respect you are not answering your question. How will it change the UK? During the referendum, any negative views on the economic consequences were poo-pooed as Project Fear. Now we have a better idea of what Leave means Leave meant to those that led the campaign.

Leaving without a deal on World Trade Organisation terms will have serious consequences. But they still advocate "no deal" supported by those who either do not care about the consequences or do not understand them. At best there will be positive benefits and negative impacts . The likes of millionaires like Farage and Mogg do not care about ordinary people, they will make money and be insulated from these downsides whatever. But in the short term, those who currently export goods and services to the EU27 will face closures, unemployment and this will have serious impacts on poverty, public services, charity income. House prices will fall and while this will please some it will leave many in negative equity and make mortgages more difficult.

Brexit has exposed a very nasty streak in our society, people so fanatical they are willing to endanger lives. This selfish, narrow thinking will persist for decades.

I agree but that will need the parties to change away from their dogmatic approaches.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Even the Brexiters will have no stomach for it when we are still trying to negotiate our way out in 2021. Therefore it will have no effect on the UK because it won't happen.

However, I will indulge you. I think it will be quite limiting for the UK and that over time, we will be diminished. Although we have a strong economy now, it was partly driven by our ability to be a bridge between the USA and Europe. Politically, we will be demoted to the rank of an individual country. Our nuclear deterrent will be one casualty of the faltering economy, and with it, our seat at the political "Top Table" will also be lost.

However, the British and the Irish peoples are resilient and resourceful, and our economic decline will not be terminal, we will just be diminished. Down, but not out.

I think it will split the union, because the Scots see the benefit of being part of Europe, and have the resourcefulness to capitalise on re-joining the EU. Plus they have lots of oil and gas they can sell, as well as substantial renewable energy supplies. Similarly the Northern Irish will probably decide that it is better to be part of a whole Ireland within the EU than relying on the UK government having enough money and will to spend this money keeping the province going/growing.

Personally, I don't see any of the above as being bad. And we have chosen this path as a nation, so we have to follow it, until there is a consensus to change direction.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I agree. I think if backed into a corner, with either No Deal or Revoke being the only options, they'll Revoke!!

What that'll do to the country, heaven only knows.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Parliament is doing it's job for once, it would have been better if they'd done this years ago. Boris Johnson and Rees Mogg are trying to turn us into a banana republic, cheered on by half the country.

I'm sick of the "we won, so what we want should be done now and hell to how it affects anything" attitude.

The underlying issues are far bigger than Brexit. The Brexit vote was an opportunity for many to express their discontentment with the establishment and the impact of the changing world. Income and wealth inequality are widening in the UK. Being in Europe isn't of direct benefit to many.

Seems as if the new political party is struggling to gain traction.
