Thanks for this article. So far I am not able to see any information related to visitors should hold return ticket. But I will read it one more time and then update you.
Agai, so why have they not purchased a return ticket that can be amended for a fee? The fact you refuse to answer this says a lot.
7.1.2.7 you do not appear to have valid or lawfully acquired travel documents or you appear in our opinion not to meet requisite visa requirements, you seek to enter a country through which you may be in transit for which you do not have valid travel documents (or meet the visa requirements), you destroy your travel documents during flight or between check-in and boarding or refuse to surrender your travel documents to the flight crew, against receipt, or allow us to copy your travel documents when so requested;
Turning up in the UK with a visit visa and no return travel is a HUGE alarm bell.0 -
As above and this applies to many countries .
Any passenger refused admission at border control are returned with the airline footing the bill .0 -

Spot on.
OP, It's called carriers liability. They have to pay for your detention and removal from the UK. They are also given a penalty. As such, they have terms and conditions as I posted above to try and stop them being hit with the added expense.0 -
Hi Aylesbury,
Thanks for your reply. I can agree that I have just checked and submitted. I can agree its my mistake but later I referred to their terms and I am not able to find anything on this about the return ticket.
Also for all who spent time and helped me to reply on this thread.
I have narrated the 2014 incident just to know that anyone had this experience from this airlines. If yes, just thought of asking what did they have done.
For the current incident:
On the day of travel where the check-in ground staff refused to check-in my friends without return ticket. I did phone to their customer staff and asked them about the current rules. The customer care staff mentioned that it is not mentioned anywhere and he sent an email to the ground staff but the ground staff were not ready to look into that at all. It looks like they don't have a policy and they provided a wrong information.
Honestly if you book a ticket for more than 2 people online with return comes expensive when you book forward and return journey individually (middle class thinking). Also you will get tickets cheaper if you book around 21 days before the travel instead of booking everything upfront. I have seen this personally many times. That is the only reason we normally won't book ticket with return.
I have invited my in-laws many times and they never overstayed and I never had issues with other airlines and this incident happened with Etihad this time. For my friends we have ended up booking almost double the price because of the last min and we didn't have enough time to look around some deals (hard earned money). If you think I am being unreasonable, I am really sorry for that..
I am looking for some formalised document either by government or Airlines, that would be perfect. Also most of the times the deals we are getting is from the third party sites were there won't be anything mentioned about return ticket requirement. There will be mostly about the cancellation and booking policies.
Once again really thanks for your time and replies.

Hi Powerful & JJ Egan,
Thanks for your replies. Answered why I didn't booked the return ticket in my previous reply to Aylesbury.

Thanks Pollycat
"If you are saying that this airline is denying boarding to passengers who actually have all the correct documentation, what does their website say about 'denied boarding'?"
I will check this with the airlines.
"So, OP, are you 100% sure that these friends of yours meet every immigration regulation and every airline regulation? "
Yes they do. Normally if you apply for visitor visa they have to show some assets (dependencies) which they have shown during visa appointment. So that they will return to their home country.
