why should the OP be forced to spend their time doing something because of un-requested interference from a random corporation? I would be livid.

If by "livid" you mean something which is mildly annoying (at worst) then yeah, I suppose so. And it's not really a "random" organisation since (so far as I can tell) the people receiving these anger inducing cards already hold an online credit account with Next?

On an opposite tack, many years ago, as a customer, I received a Midland Bank, yes that long ago, Credit Card. Accompanied by a letter advising I had been selected for the card and as a gesture it was preloaded with £20 credit.
Bought £20 of fuel with it, cut it up, then immediately after receiving the first zero balance statement showing the £20 spend, cancelled it.
So it's not all bad. I wasn't displeased, just the opposite. Thanks Midland Bank!
I don't think I would be happy in the o.p.'s example. Not "livid" though. Destroy the card and phone to cancel - nicely.
  • My partner had one of these cards in a similar situation, he thought he'd said yes to a simple store points card and got a store credit card with a £900 balance. He thought nothing of it, never used it, has moved house since and can't find the card... We've recently done credit checks on ourselves due to needing to move house and simply seeing what we're on. There, on his report, is the Next store Credit card. Trickling along nicely in the background... So don't just cut it and chuck it, if you don't want it on the report, cancel it.

It seems to have helped his credit score though as he's never missed a payment (as there is no balance to pay) and it seems to be acting in his favour.... Who knew!

If only we could buy fuel with it!

It's a shame that lenders won't be as impressed as the CRA appears to be!

Maybe it was because he'd spent a certain amount at once (he was buying 6 coats for the family)...hmmm, not too sure why it was offered in all honesty and he was suprised when it turned out to be the store credit card as he didn't think his credit score was that good back then :rotfl:

Well it's only me and maybe I am a bit old fashioned but the first thing I would do is raise a complaint with them that they have sent me a credit card without my asking for one

if everybody did this they would soon stop !

I can't help thinking this happens because people absent-mindedly say "yes" to things in a shop without really understanding what they're agreeing to.
Opening a store card often comes with other benefits, such as a discount on your purchase, and these are sometimes pitched to the customer without initially mentioning that obtaining the benefit requires opening a credit account. Argos have done this to me in the past, and seemed baffled when I turned down their offer of a discount, and I'm sure other retailers have too. They want the conversation to go along the lines of:

Store assistant: "Would you like £10 off your order today?"
    Customer: "Yes please!"
Store assistant: "OK, I'll open a credit account for you then we'll get that discount applied."
    Customer: "OK, thanks!"

They set me up without permission. This practice needs to stop. Next pay letter received falsely "claims" I signed a Credit Agreement at 1am in the morning whilst I was asleep. They have sent me a credit agreement in a mixture of my christian name and my wifes middle names. Shops have been closed for 3 months, so couldnt have agreed over the counter- I have never had a store card - Never purchased from Next or any retail online either - so what gives them the right to set these agreements up without consent or permission?
I do not accept its" just a phone call to cancel" It should never be done in the 1st place
