The same companies.

I see the same companies cropping up here time after time after time. A huge percentage of them are well known for there appalling reputations YET people still buy from them.

Just a thought.

Because - even though there's masses of information about these appalling companies out there - people simply don't bother to check out who they're giving their money to before clicking on 'pay now'.

I see the same day in, day out on the Air Travel board on Tripadvisor.
People warning other people not to book flight tickets with company 'x' even though they did the same, despite - in some cases - thousands of warnings being given.

If people took a little more care, there'd eventually be less of these companies.
And less threads complaining about the goods and/or services provided by these companies.
  • It’s down to personal experience - if people didn’t use every company that’d been complained about, there’d be no shops less!

For example I’ve never had a problem with Currys, should I stop using them because someone else says so?
    I think not :)

Most posts that complain paint a wrong picture .
Ten Million customers versus 10 thousand complaints .

I agree with this and when I read threads that say 'x courier is the worst ever. Don't use' and similar warnings, if I've had good experience from that company, I'll take no notice.

I think the OP may be talking more about people Googling (for example) 'cheap wedding dress' and buying a poorly made, awful quality, badly fitting dress from China.

It's those people who need to do some research before parting with their money.
If I'm considering ordering an item from a company I've never used before, I always check out the reviews.
And I always check the delivery details (I prefer Royal Mail to couriers as it's easier for me to pop to the local Sorting Office if I've missed a delivery rather than rearrange) and I check the returns policy.

True, but reading complaints might reasonably sway your decision between sellers.

My washing machine packed in on Friday so I needed to order a new one. Because I've had good experiences in the past I immediately went to the John Lewis website and ordered from them without even looking at Currys because a) I've read too many threads on this board 're poor after sales service if faults occur b) poor personal experience of their in-store sales staff, though no direct issues with purchases. I've only looked at the Currys site after reading this thread to compare their price to JL and, though the price is the same, they can't match the delivery date without incurring an additional fee plus JL include free install/ disposal - so Currys would have cost me an additional £70. Given both companies price match I still would have opted for John Lewis as I have more confidence in them than I do Currys, in fact I would have stuck with them even if they had been more expensive, within reason.

It’s similar to the old adage, if you’ve had a good meal at a restaurant you tell one person, if you’ve had a bad experience you tell ten.

People complain when things go wrong but don’t come on to internet to report how well things went.

Incidentally, plenty of grumbles about John Lewis on here!

Can I ask which companies that you are referring to? Sometimes I feel it's down to lack of options or that people aren't aware of their bad reputations. These same companies will also have plenty of customers who've had good experiences so it's a tough one. I wasn't aware that Wickes had such a bad reputation until my boyfriend bought some kitchen units from them and we had problems with it. It's only then you look and see that a lot of people have had issues with them. But saying that, they also have a fair percentage of good reviews. So maybe some people feel it's worth the risk if the store is offering something they want... Others may not want any potential hassle. But you can never guarantee a good experience anywhere you go. You could go to a store on 10 occasions and the first 9 are great, but the 10th is awful.

Patty, that is very true. Maybe because it's the norm to expect a good experience and so when people have a bad one they want everyone to know about this bad experience.

Re the bit in bold - that shouldn't be when you check out the company you're giving your money to.
It should be before you sign a contract or place an order.

People don't always think to do this or have the time to. Sometimes you walk into a high street store, you don't think "Maybe I should check out this places reviews before I buy anything", you just go ahead and buy. It's natural really. You shouldn't have to read up on every company you buy from before you buy from them. Why isn't it the other way around instead, where the companies should have to provide a good service as standard? It's not really fair to put all that responsibility on the consumer. It's meant to be a mutually beneficial transaction. Plus, like I said, for all the negative reviews there are also plenty of positive ones and one person's experience won't necessarily be the next person's.

The Praise, Vent and Warnings board bears this out. "Praise" threads are definitely in the minority, though I have posted one's in the past re Mercedes and Amazon.

I've read several threads complaining about JL, but as my personal experience with them has always been good I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt, just as the earlier poster does with regard to Currys.
