Rental property unable to put up curtains and blinds

LOL I am an ex engineer too and my take on tension is pushed out. Compression is pushed in? But whatever works LOL
As to Landords putting up poles curtains, why? only for prospective tenant to complain wrong style, colour, drop, width etc.
The modern fad is no curtains at all only designer blinds in Grey LOL
Many Landords will not allow pictures hanging, wall shelfs, Wall tvs etc anything that damages the inner fabric of the property. NO HOLES in walls! Saves a lot of arguing etc at tenancy end.
But then again this is in more refurbed/renovated/upmarket properties.
Older ones they let them do what they want as they will probably have to steam clean the place and repair anyway:)
If an object is in tension, then it must have an external force pulling it out, correct. For these curtain poles, the wall is pushing in on it, putting it into compression.
I'll put it another way: an object in tension is being forced to be longer than it really wants to be, an object in compression is being forced to be shorter than it really wants to be. If I stretch something, to make it longer than it wants to be, and put it between two opposite walls then let go, the object will shrink back and fall down. On the other hand if I compress something, making it shorter than it wants to be, and put it between two opposite walls then let go, it will try to get longer but can't because the walls are in the way, so instead of me providing the compressive force the wall is now providing the compressive force.
I see your point on curtains, and agree that neutrally coloured blinds would be an adequate solution that should satisfy everyone. The OP's problem is that the landlord won't allow curtain poles OR blinds - and that's crazy.0 -
Regardless of the physics, shops selling them call them 'tension rods' so that's what people need to Google/ask for.
Dunelm sell them for peanuts, but they're only suitable for light-weight things like voiles.
OP - agree with everyone else. Find another rental! I've never known one that simply won't permit any window coverings at all. Bonkers.0 -

There is no way my friend can sleep without any curtains etc What do you suggest if she still has issues with landlords that don't allow any curtain poles, rails etc?
PUT IN CHEAP BLINDS. If she cannot sleep without curtains get somewhere else.
Ask if she can do this. Landlords like blinds they cause minimum mess and are usually left behind. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0 -
Absolutely barking mad LL. Wouldn't go near it. About as barking as LLs/LAs who advertise properties for rent and provide just one (or, if you're lucky) three photos.
Among other things, it makes you wonder what else you can't do at that property.I can't imagine a life without cheese. (Nigel Slater)0 -
The subject line suggests they're not.
Perhaps that what OP put? but friend was told differentially by estate agent?
Friend needs to ask and clarify.
If not its stupid and she should go elsewhere.
If so landlord will not be in business long! The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0 -
If she wants to go ahead with the property, try these (as recommended by another poster): https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/curtains-blinds/schottis-block-out-pleated-blind-dark-grey-art-90369507/ They also have white and green ones. They stick on to the window frame at the top and have velcro at the bottom. They're not amazing but they will do the job. We have the white ones as well as curtains, bought as a temporary solution a couple of years ago but still doing the job just fine without looking terrible!
Also, if the light outside her window shines in at night, get in touch with the local council. I emailed ours and they fitted a hood thing within a couple of days, no questions asked.0
