Rental property unable to put up curtains and blinds

My friend is separating from her husband and needs a property to rent until the divorce is finalised.. As she only separated last week, she is currently at her parents. Its cramped. Problem is she has found a rental that she is interested in. There are no curtain poles/rails and blinds. She asked was it possible to have them installed or her to do herself. The letting agent said the landlord will not permit any installation of poles, rails and hooks. Is this a common thing? There is no way my friend can sleep without any curtains etc as opposite, there is a street lamp which is on all night. Then she doesn't like the feeling of being in a goldfish bowl effect.

What do you suggest if she still has issues with landlords that don't allow any curtain poles, rails etc?

Its only short term - she nor her parents have the money to put down a deposit for buying.

Find a different rental. She can check when she views if there are curtain rails fitted when she views.

as a small time LL myself - go elsewhere - agent/LL is batsh*t crazy not to provide the means to, or at least expect a tenant to want to put up curtains/blinds

Try tension rods instead. They are not perfect but may help to an extent. You can buy them a Wilkos
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

    Is the landlord Scandinavian?

Quite common not to have them/use them. My son lives in an upmarket new build flat. His bedroom is at right angles to another flat and they can literally wave at each other from their beds. Landlord could not understand the problem. Needless to say he blocked the windows using tension poles. Fortunately the other occupant is also a foreign and did the same.

Provided when the tenancy ends she returns the property in the state it was at the start, she's is fine.

Any 'damage' must be made good.

Some small holes to fix curtain rails etc could be filled easily and then painted over with matching paint.

If the landlord complained during the tenancy (eg at inspection), tenant simply reassures the LL it will be made good.

If the landlord tries to deduct money from deposit when the tenancy ends, then actual damage would have to be proved. I suggest the tenant takes photos at start of tenancy, and again at the end after filling/painting the holes. Highly doubtful there'd be any sign of 'damage' that the deposit scheme arbitartors would agree with.

Having said that, this sounds like a nutty landlord so the curtain rails may be the least of the problems........

Perhaps I have a warped mind but has she viewed the place and checked for hidden cameras?

LL sounds like a potential voyeur :rotfl:

Make sure she reads the full terms if goes ahead, LL might be disgruntled if she doesn't participate in 'Naked Tuesday'

I would have thought Scandinavians would at least understand the problems of sleeping during long summer days, when it never properly gets dark at night.

Landlords do not want tenants who are usually younger generation, attempting to drill hole all over the house in their amateurish attempts to put up curtains. Nor if property has wooden surrounds around windows, holes all over top.

Professionally fitted blinds are usually allowed, as most tenants leave them. Landlords usually fit blinds themselves in refurbs but frown on curtain poles unless there is an understanding when tenant moves out they will repair or it comes out of deposit.

Most tenants have their own ideas of what curtain poles etc they want and at end of day after a few tenancy's some properties could end up looking a right mess unless they are repaired.
