Builder wanting a LOT more money, already had almost double time!

  • Before I go

If they “the builders” had told us it was going to cost 80-100k more before they tore half our house down, we’d have stopped, and reprioritised/stopped until we could get the funds, they didn’t, they continued.

Also who leaves someone without a roof for 3-4 months? We had a tin roof but it’s not water tight.
No facilities for around 6 months now

    Wow guys nice trolling WTH

Why would I delete or change my posts!?

We have not been quibbling over priced for a while, how on earth was that inferred?

We agreed a price in June 2018, started work in July 2018, were told once in March 2019 it will cost more, then in the same month told it will take the remainder, and they wanted all the money immediately.

I’m ending this thread, it started off good, but is now for trolls

Earlier you used the word " haggling".
I have a friend who had a very big project like yours.
She chose the builders because of their good reviews, and recommendations.
She trusted them as professionals, and wouldn't have insulted them by haggling.
It's something you do on a market not with your professional tradesmen.
Sorry if you don't like my bluntness here. You can simply choose to ignore my comments

Also, I just don't get this
"Work started end of July, digging the footings for the garage, footings poured and the first course of concrete blocks going up, I go measure and it's wrong, by almost a metre, we got some back.

Then the walls go up, not in concrete block, but in thermalites, I agreed this would be OK to help with costs."

Almost straight away the materials decided on in the quote are changed.
Why would you do this, it doesn't seem logical, messing around with materials and not getting a revised quote. Why would abuilder even suggest this if you had a contract.

I agreed only to keep costs down and was assured it would still meet regulations.

I am openly admitting I have been naive.

No one is trolling. You have received good advice but started talking about closing the thread when things weren’t going your way. People have a habit of flouncing when they don’t like the answers they receive and start deleting their posts, rendering the thread useless for anyone wanting to learn from it in future. Quoting your post is insurance against you doing the same.

Either heed the advice you’re getting or leave the thread as you have repeatedly said you will. No one is forcing you to respond if you’ve got what you need or don’t want advice any more.

Forget regulations there, why would you want to drive costs down when you'd agreed a price

so we wouldnt be in this situation, where extra sums, not agreed were being asked for
  • I did say I've been naive

    Still here? Ok.

Can’t you see that the haggling and messing about with specifications mid-build is part of the problem here? It’s often said that cowboy builders require cowboy customer and it’s looking like this whole project has been handled poorly from both sides. You are a layman, fair enough, but that’s precisely why you shouldn’t have entertained managing the project and meddling with things mid-build. From your last post it seems you were already trying to cut corners to keep costs within the quoted price.

I go back to my first piece of advice. You are way out of your depth and need proper legal advice.

So did he ever say " this is the quote, but it might end up costing more?"
