Opos chasing former One Select customer

  • I have now settled up with Opos, as looking at the few invoices/ emails that I have received & cross checking bank statements, the final OneSelect bill that I received on 10th December reflected the last direct debit that OneSelect took, but only in fact reflected consumption up to and including 30th November, so there was 2 weeks approx of consumption to take into account to get to the date that they folded. Luckily I provided meter readings at the beginning and end of December which was enough to validate the estimated readings at the folding date.

What leaves a very sour taste is that
    A) I have had to use a lot of my time to sit down and check this.
    B) That we were referred to a debt collection company before we even saw or were explained the final balance.
    c) The relentless and threatening nature with which Opos kept phoning and emailing me.

Hopefully OFGEM will learn from this totally unsatisfactory experience and make better arrangements in future for consumers affected by matters that are caused entirely away from those consumers' control.

Hi RichardAli+Family, can I ask if the direct debit was detailed on your bill of 10th December?

Mine showed the billing period to be 22 October to 30 November, but the direct debit taken on 26 October wasn't shown as a credit on the bill.

I don't know whether it could have been added to the previous billing period (i.e. up to 21 October) - I've no previous One Select bills to look at.

    Cheers

  • Yes it covered 26th Aug - 30th Nov and showed credits on 24 Sep, Oct and Nov which match my direct debits, that on Nov 24th being the last that I made to them.

    Another point would be

    D) Why couldn't Together Energy split my December direct debit between clearing the One Select debit and the latter half of the month that we were forced onto them for?

They presumably started totally 'quids-in' with peoples' full December payments and only half a month to actually supply energy for?
  • Hi - I’ve had exactly the same experience and the same Alison to deal with.

I’ve sent an email to my new supplier, Together Energy, who confirm Opos have been appointed to collect any debit balances on behalf of administrators.

Like you, very sceptical and I’ve received threatening texts. Everything from Opos is unprofessional.

I did speak to Alison Walker weeks ago and as I knew I did owe money to One Select, I set up a payment plan - which apparently “failed” - it shouldn’t have ! I then sent part payment and noticed this morning on my bank statement it is a “returned transaction”. This is all very frustrating particularly as I’m currently in Australia on holiday!!

Ofgem have appointed Opos and Together Energy. I think their communication is also poor.

So in theory, also concerned that this may all be a scam - but there is some legitimate reasons in them contacting One Select customers who were in debit it seems.

We could all deal with guidance from Ofgem - if you do get anywhere with them ; I’d appreciate a reply.

    Thanks everyone.

Has anyone received any letters from Opos? I kept getting calls on my mobile but blocked it thinking it was some kind of scam. But however they managed to send me a text and it does refer to OneSelect, which is why I am now taking notice. However, I'd rather they sent me a letter stating what I might owe, rather than call them on my own time.

    Thanks

  • I also have been receiving texts and repeated calls on my mobile from Glasgow quoting a ref no.and telling me to contact them , it coincides with my final gas and electric bill from the new utility company appointed by of gem telling me what I owed and I would be contacted by an agent.
I have discovered that the source of these texts and calls come from a company called Opos which is a debt collection agency.
I have spoken to these people and on three separate occasions requested that they verify themselve by post as I do not feel happy dealing with them as they could well be a scam.
If they are bona fide they are behaving in a very un business like manner, There has been no prior communication before these texts and calls , shouldn't we have received confirmation from Of gem first?
I am now writing to them demanding verification as I refuse to pay anything to them until I have had it proved they are legitimate.

    How have you got on?
  • I have been challenging them - they provided a completely garbled bill, with random dates, and a whole bunch of "cancelled bills" and recharges. I asked them to explain !!!!!! this was, and they put my account on hold but didn't actually respond.

2 months went by so I assumed it was closed, but randomly (and goodness only knows why) they've started chasing me again. They've not explained the bill, nor apologised for the truly crappy service. "Relentless and threatening" is right.

I will escalate this to OFGEM if needed, they can't treat people like this. Anyone had any success? I feel there'd be more response from OFGEM if a few of us complained.

I too was a customer of One Select but never received a final bill.

I too had umpteen unsolicited phone calls from Opos but had no idea whether they were legitimate (they refused to confirm anything - how ridiculous is that?).
Today I have received a letter saying they wrote to me recently (not received) to advise One Select "has instructed us to collect the balance". The letter also says "Full details of your outstanding account can be found to the right of this page" - which is complete balderdash, there's just a three-figure amount (no detail whatsoever). The letter continues with intimidating hints of what they might do.

What should I do, please? I do not recognise the debt. Must I therefore deny it?

I have no known debt whatsoever and am appalled at the high-pressure, arrogant, completely unhelpful and unreasonable way Opos are trying to extract money from me. I find this harassing and stressful.

Is there anyone on here who can share some top legal advice, please?
