If you feel the need, report it to the ASA.

As stragglebod pointed out, I would need a photo of the fine print in order to report this particular incident.

But, if you re-read my posts you'll see that I'm complaining about the general trend across various supermarkets rather than this specific example

    Thanks anyway

The checkout operator / supervisor was wrong- Mixed items definitely work.

It's much more likely there was one offer on the breads and one offer on the sweets or something of that nature.
It's also possible the wrong PLU was used on the bakery printer for one item, or that one was not on the offer.
Wouldn't be the first time either that the POS was in the wrong place....

Unfortunately, I can't comment further from over the internet, but a decent CSD person would have been able to look into exactly which of these went wrong.

What you have is sufficient to report it.....whether they can act or will act is another matter.

I tried it first on the automated checkout. That didn't work. I went back to the shelf and took the photo before returning to a checkout operator. That didn't work, either, so the supervisor was called. The supervisor was insistent that the offer meant two of the same item. It wasn't until I threatened to report the matter that the supervisor backed down and agreed to take action to make the offer more clear.

As I've already said, this is not the first time I've been caught out by mixed items that most definitely do NOT work. That's the thrust of my whole complaint here :-)

I agree it is very misleading and I would have thought the same as you did.

Ring or email customer services, it may well be that the store has not set up their till system correctly.

I have always found them very helpful and have been told on past occasions that they will speak to the manager of the store.

Its that if there are rolls/bread on sale on a "any 2 for £1" basis, it needs to be 2 of the same item. You cannot (for example) take 1 pack of well fired rolls and 1 pack of soft baps (even if both are being offered on a "any 2 for £1" basis).

But surely if it's two of the same item then by definition it can't be any two.
This is how Tesco advertise "any two" and you can choose from a selection of Coca Cola products:

If on the other hand it's two items the same at a discounted price, they show this:

    2 for £1

Can be any two of those items, doesn't have to be the same one.

You'll see in the photo I took that the top shelf has hot cross buns in packs of six. These are not included in the "any two" online offer. But on the shelf they also have the "any two for £1" small sticker in front of them.

So there you are - the big stickers should say "Any 2 for £1, items on the two lower shelves only"...

but they don't say that, of course

    And your point is?

It's perfectly clear online. I've never seen a problem online. But I do regularly come across misleading offer pricing on supermarket shelves and that's what I'm complaining about!
