I think obviously we all basically want to get the best deals for Energy, (or insurance or whatever) that's why we look to moneysavingexpert.com for help, but I agree with Paycheck, I'm sure many of us don't fully read the T&C's of each Energy company we are interested in. I thought I had done, and as I was with the previous years deal with EDF, and in that year they only phoned once and asked about fitting a Smart meter (nothing was said about it being part of my Tariff agreement though!) I had said I didn't want one, especially with the doubt about it working if I changed suppliers, so I guess I may have wrongly assumed it was the same for the later deal, especially as it's widely known that it's not compulsory to have a Smart meter.

But as Matelodave points out, it is important nowadays that the T&C's are carefully read and a copy saved, although it's true to say some of them can be difficult to understand!!
I'm grateful for the advice and guidance of the 'longer served' and more informed members of this Forum, and I'm of a similar age to Robisere and a retired Electronic Technician, who has been building electronic test equipment and using computers from the mid 1970's, so I too have no fear of technology or change, but these meters are being put into our homes, so we should be fully informed so we can make the decision as to whether we want them or not, and not just 'forced' into it just because we are trying to save some money, which I'm sure we all want to do!

I think from reading posts in this thread and others on the Forum, it seems to me many people, myself included, are concerned by what comes over on the phone as confrontational and perhaps even a threatening manner of the Energy company people, which I'm certainly going to tell EDF about!
Given the helpful advice of Houbara, I don't think I have any particular concerns at the moment of having a Smart meter installed, if indeed it's going to be a SMET2 one, (which I will try and get fully confirmed by EDF), plus as several people have correctly pointed out it was part of the agreement I made, and I would wish to abide by it, although I honestly didn't see it!

Was this in the T&Cs when you signed up for this tariff? If not then they cannot make up new T&Cs & try & impose them on your current contract.

All current & old EDF tariff T&Cs are at https://www.edfenergy.com/for-home/energy-tariffs/tariff-terms

With my Simply Fixed Feb21 tariff there is no requirement for a smart meter but both Easy Online Exclusive Aug19v3 & Sep19v3 have the following:-
Signing up for this tariff means you agree to:
    • Have both your electricity and gas supplied by EDF Energy
    • Provide a valid email address and register for MyAccount – if you
prefer phone support, this tariff isn’t for you
    • Manage your account entirely online - you won’t have access to our call centre, but our online Live Chat advisers and Help Centre are available 24/7
    • Receive your bills, account information and updates electronically – paper communication isn’t an option with this tariff
    • Pay by Direct Debit - if you cancel your Direct Debit, we will transfer you to our ‘Deemed Contract Scheme’, which is likely to be more expensive
Having a smart meter installed by us, when we’re installing them in your area. Smart meters help you control your energy use, with meter accurate bills and provide automatic readings, so you don’t have to.

Just musing ,if you already have a smart meter installed by ANO , will EDF insist on a meter change ?? I know some other suppliers tariffs were only available if you didn't actually have a SMETS meter, but presumably that isn't a precondition of the tariffs in discussion?

On the subject of T&C's - I signed up with Eversmart last August for a 12 month fix and downloaded the T&C's which covered just three pages

They then issued another set on October 25th which had expanded to 20 pages. Their latest iteration dated 12th December is now 31 pages long.

So it's well worthwhile making sure that the copy you get relates to your specific contract and that they aren't trying to squeeze in a later version.

It's not easy to obtain previous versions so make sure you download the relevant one at the time you sign up

What a patronising, totally inaccurate post! You have absolutely no idea about the reasons that I, or anyone else, may have for refusing to take Smart meters. I am not resistant to change, I simply do not see the advantages for me as opposed to my current arrangements. I am 74 and have only recently stopped building computers: I have been an aircraft engineer and a motor engineer. Your "fuel station" reference is so risible that it points to your lack of understanding. Fuel stations are all organised, run and maintained by companies which have to necessarily use the same, or very similar, equipment, which works in very similar ways to serve the public en masse. Each Smart meter, indeed any meter, is fitted to one private dwelling and may be totally different to the one next door, with a totally different way of working.

I do know alot ofthe reasons because people openly post them on here saying why they don't want them.

You may not see any advantage personally but it's not your equipment and you don't own it. In the past many millions of dial meters have been replaced with electronic ones by the energy companies because they are more accurate and work better for them, people never had a choice.
Now the smart meters work better for them again because so many people don't read their meters and complain about large bills. So rolling out smart meters nationwide is a good solution.

Fuel station equipment has to meet a set standard which among other things defines the accuracy just like smart meters have to meet a set standard. But they are certainly not all the same and their are different manufacturers of the equipment. Also the fuel station owns the equipment just like the energy companies own the meters. So I think it's a good comparison.

The fact that you have built computers, been an aircraft engineer etc means nothing and doesn't mean you understand the energy supply market.

Please do not reply to something you know nothing about or the reasons why I wanted an actual date it's compulsory to have one fitted,it's actually due to a relative needing to have the electricity on 24/7 at present but will not after a certain date.So please stop getting involved in something you are clueless about.I know full well I signed up for a meter and would have accepted it and made alternative arrangements.

I was after the date it's compulsory for me to have one fitted and no one at Edf can or will tell me,despite there actually being a given date where they can put you on their standard tariff and charge the £70 if the meter is not fitted,They are completely clueless.

And it's not a waste of time for me to pay the £70 since a newer tariff is now available around £70 cheaper,so you are talking out of your backside again. Once the mse energy club cashback is paid I am out of EDF and that is why I have now stopped trying to get answers off the muppets.

In your position I still would have wanted to be contacted about a meter being fitted and then once they did arrange it for a date after which the electricity can be turned off. No need for you to contact them at all and you didn't need to get a date from them because this could have been discussed when they contacted you.

There is no way they would have just put you on a standard tariff without contacting you first.

Plus you must have joined the wrong tariff in the first place if you can see one that is £70 cheaper after only a few months. The market hasn't decreased over this time to have that much of a difference.

So looks like i wasn't clueless after all because my initial post is still correct even after more information ;)
