Smart meters EDF
Options
Has anyone else had a problem about smart meters.
I was with E.ON and decided to change supplier, so I went onto Meerkat to find the right deal for me, I was looking for a deal that did not have a smart meter, so I pick the correct one for myself. I took the easy online exclusive aug19 v3 on the understanding a smart meter was not compulsory. Saying that I have received many emails saying I must have a smart meter installed and if I don’t I would be moved to a variable price tariff.
Anyway I decided to talk with an advisor who told me that and I quote “ I would like to inform you that as per this tariff easy online exclusive aug19 v3 it is not mandatory till the time you are getting a call from our team to get the smart meter then you need to get the smart meter. If you do not take the smart meter then your tariff will be cancelled and you will be on the variable price tariff “
I of course was not pleased about this and during the conversation they then said “ I would like to inform you that just now I have had a word with my team and it has been advised that till this current tariff ends you do not need to get a smart meter”
So I said I was not happy about how this has been handled and would like to make a complaint, however since making a complaint I received a phone call from EDF asking what they could do, and I pretty much said nothing they could do, and that I would change supplier in August this year. But today I received an email saying they will give me two options.
First one, that they install the smart meter and they would put it on dummy mode.
Second, that they waive the early termination penalties associated with this tariff which must be completed within 5 weeks. Please respond to confirm of your happy to accept either of these resolutions to your complaint and if not , what else you require please.
Also which I forgot to say earlier I was told “ As U.K. government has taken an initiative to install smart meters to all the properties in the U.K. due to which it became mandatory.
I am a little confused and angry. Anyone got any advice please?? Or anyone had the same problem??

Hi Paycheck,
I've had a phone call today from EDF asking when I would like my Smart meter installed (I have never asked for one!) as this would be the newer 2nd Gen meters that would be OK with swapping over to any other Energy suppliers.
I said that I was happy to stay as I am and send monthly meter readings to them, and after the person kept on trying to interrogate me as to why I didn't want one, he then said that it was part of the tariff I'm on that I have a Smart meter fitted, which is news to me!
I've looked at my account on the EDF Energy web site and can't see any mention of this, plus as in your case, he then said that if I didn't have one then I would be put on the Standard (I think he said, ... although it could have been Variable) tariff!
At this I was quite angry and asked if he was threatening me now, to which he replied he wasn't, and although I was annoyed I politely ended the call saying I was glad he had informed me of this and I would take the first opportunity to leave EDF Energy and repeated I was happy staying as I was, I didn't want a Smart meter thank you!
I will have to keep an eye on my EDF account to see if it gets changed to some other tariff, but I presume they would have to notify me that this was going to happen?
It would be great if these Smart meters were to be of any benefit to me, but I can only see that it will benefit the Energy companies!

Yes, when bullying tactics like this are used to make customers believe that something is compulsory when it is not!
But I have to say that I have been with EDF for many years and they have mentioned Smart Meters to me several times. I eventually told them that I would not have one and I understood that it was not compulsory. They have left me alone since and have never mentioned moving me to another tariff. If they did, they would lose a long-time customer.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Matelodave,
I can see that you have made a great deal of posts, and I have only made one, so I would have liked/expected a bit more help/understanding from someone who had a lot more experience on this Forum.
Because of the phone call I had today I just searched for info on Smart meters and EDF, and the original post came up first, and as it was very close to my experience I thought I would reply.
If there is any other area that might cover what I was saying and be more helpful, I would be grateful if you would direct me to it please, if it's not too much trouble.
Thank you.

OK thank you Matelodave, I will have a look.
You'll have to excuse me as I'm nearly 70 years old and I'm not brilliant at this Forum thing, I was just so annoyed/upset at the phone call I got I wanted to see if it was a common thing to get from the Energy companies!
If as you say there are many threads for this I can understand your comment, is there no way, or is it too difficult to get these threads combined, because it does seem to be a hot topic even if it has been live for a long time?
Anyway, thanks for your help.

I don t think you have read the T/C s for the Easy Online Exclusive Aug V3 . It is only for new customers who will accept a smart meter. Most of the big 6 have these sort of tariffs around and EDF also have them0 -
OK Houbara, I'm on the Easy Online Exclusive Sep19v2, but I suppose essentially it will be the same, and I thought I had gone through the T/C's at the time, but fair enough it does say it in that PDF so I must have missed that, although this condition was never mentioned to me in several other phone calls I've had with them until today, so they must be getting desperate now!
May I ask, as I have now seen that you have many post on the subject, (although I'm not sure you are totally unbiased. ;-) ) but you seem to be a sensible sort of chap (if you are indeed male!) but at the risk of getting a lot of irate people on here discussing this even further, do you consider there is at this stage (if the 2nd Gen Meters are now being installed) any major concerns at having these Smart Meters?
Thanks.

EDF were installing the very good Elster smart meters I believe
There is a list available ( i will add this later ) which shows which models of SMETS1 meters will be enrolled by the DCC so maybe you can enquire with EDF if their meters fall into this group.
If not then you have a justifiable reason to refuse that meter from EDF.
Absolutely no concerns at all about smart meters .I ve had them at my last address fitted by BG. They both worked fine. I ve worked as a meter reader for BG for many years and seen them in operation from 2007 when BG had enough faith in them to install them well before OFGEM ratification.. I can t recall any major complaints from customers once the meters were fitted and matched with the IHD. A few of the early ones had SIM card problems and some could not receive a strong enough signal in poor reception areas.0 -
OK, thanks for that Houbara, according to the person I spoke to he definitely said it was the 2nd Gen/SMETS2 meters that would be installed, as I had said last year I wasn't interested in having the SMETS1 type, so maybe this is why they haven't bothered me up till now!?
Thanks again for the info, I would be very interested to see the list of SMETS1 meters when you have time to add it.
