Yes, when bullying tactics like this are used to make customers believe that something is compulsory when it is not!

But I have to say that I have been with EDF for many years and they have mentioned Smart Meters to me several times. I eventually told them that I would not have one and I understood that it was not compulsory. They have left me alone since and have never mentioned moving me to another tariff. If they did, they would lose a long-time customer.

It really should have been compulsory because the general public don't have the necessary understanding to make a logical decision. All the people who don't want one use negative rumours about them as justification when reality they are just resistant to change.

You don't go into a fuel station and dictate what type of meter they should use to measure the fuel delivery or the type of scales used in a butchers. So why should people have a say in what type of meter the energy companies use.

I've had endless problems over this in the last 2 months.

Firstly they refused to talk over the phone to me since it's an online tariff and only online chat is allowed. Then the Indian online chat guy did not know anything about smart meters when I asked by what date my tariff Feb 20 online exclusive required me to have one fitted (still don't know). Anyone know how I can find out? Nothing at all on my contract about a date just says one must agree to it.
Then got through to the smart meter team by not mentioning my tariff and they could not confirm what type of meter it would be only saying they plan to be fitting SMET2s by May and the guy just said we are only here to make the bookings for fitting the meters.

Will now pay the £70 early termination fee for dual fuel and never touch them again.

Easily the most idiotic company I've ever dealt with.

Paycheck, you need to think about what you would like as a resolution to your complaint? You can't just open a complaint and leave it at that. It either needs to be resolved/closed, or if you can't come to an agreement, deadlocked.

The terms and conditions of that tariff do state you must have a Smart meter installed, which is not a legal requirement but they are allowed to make that a condition of the tariff, which you have agreed to upon signing up.

It sounds like as a resolution you would like to stay on the tariff but not have a Smart meter installed, which they originally offered you and you weren't happy with? If this is what you actually want call them and tell them and see if they would agree to this to resolve your complaint. Otherwise the complaint will be deadlocked and you will get nowhere as it sounds like you are just not happy about being made to follow the conditions you have agreed to.

I'm not sure why your making such as fuss about it all and trying to contact them. It would also be a complete waste of money to pay £70 to leave them.

You signed up to a tariff that required a smart meter to be installed. So you simply wait for them to contact you regarding the installation, arrange a suitable date and time and that's it. You don't need to be chasing them to get one installed, they will contact you.

What a patronising, totally inaccurate post! You have absolutely no idea about the reasons that I, or anyone else, may have for refusing to take Smart meters. I am not resistant to change, I simply do not see the advantages for me as opposed to my current arrangements. I am 74 and have only recently stopped building computers: I have been an aircraft engineer and a motor engineer. Your "fuel station" reference is so risible that it points to your lack of understanding. Fuel stations are all organised, run and maintained by companies which have to necessarily use the same, or very similar, equipment, which works in very similar ways to serve the public en masse. Each Smart meter, indeed any meter, is fitted to one private dwelling and may be totally different to the one next door, with a totally different way of working.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
  • I signed up through meerkat and I was looking for a deal with no smart meter which I thought I had done. Does everyone read the t&c’s? I don’t think so.

In the volatile market that we've got at the moment, it's an extremely good idea to read the T&C's and save a copy together with your welcome pack.

Signing or agreeing something and then complaining that you didn't read or check it beforehand isn't going to do you any good.

Honestly, I don't always read the T&C's, but at the same time I understand that if something doesn't go in my favour because I haven't read the terms and conditions it's my fault. They have offered you a chance to leave without incurring an exit fee so why don't you just take it?

Please do not reply to something you know nothing about or the reasons why I wanted an actual date it's compulsory to have one fitted,it's actually due to a relative needing to have the electricity on 24/7 at present but will not after a certain date.So please stop getting involved in something you are clueless about.I know full well I signed up for a meter and would have accepted it and made alternative arrangements.

I was after the date it's compulsory for me to have one fitted and no one at Edf can or will tell me,despite there actually being a given date where they can put you on their standard tariff and charge the £70 if the meter is not fitted,They are completely clueless.

And it's not a waste of time for me to pay the £70 since a newer tariff is now available around £70 cheaper,so you are talking out of your backside again. Once the mse energy club cashback is paid I am out of EDF and that is why I have now stopped trying to get answers off the muppets.

Anyway I decided to talk with an advisor who told me that and I quote “ I would like to inform you that as per this tariff easy online exclusive aug19 v3 it is not mandatory till the time you are getting a call from our team to get the smart meter then you need to get the smart meter. If you do not take the smart meter then your tariff will be cancelled and you will be on the variable price tariff “
Was this in the T&Cs when you signed up for this tariff? If not then they cannot make up new T&Cs & try & impose them on your current contract.
