In accident and not at fault but problem with my insurance

  • When you got the policy did you say that you have access to another car, or that you have a motorbike, etc?

Because that's what my proposal docs have said for years as I'm able to drive my other half's car, and have a couple of motorbikes as well.

I suspect that's what is being referred to there.

And yes, the vehicle I was driving is fully insured and I had the owners permission to drive it

I have spoke to my insurer and they say I'm not covered even as third party (all I needed as I was not at fault)

When filling out the forms it always asks (in my experience anyway) if you have use of other vehicles (ie, named driver on spouses policy etc).

If you said yes to this question then I would assume that is what this is referring to.

As above DOC is a specific thing and unless it explicitly states you have DOC then you very likely don't.

Even if you are covered for DOC, it will be on a TPO basis, not Comp, so the damage to your friends car would not be covered by your insurer. Your friend can make a claim against the hit-and-run driver, who will (hopefully, if he's stopped being a reckless idiot) pass it to his insurer to handle. If you already have the hit-and-run driver's insurance details, your friend could copy them in from the get-go, which might speed things up.

What a mess. Your friend should have added you as a named driver on their policy.
