Tesco Self Scan

unfortunately some people are dishonest and steal. As such when you have a system like self scan which relies on trusting the customer you will always have to randomly spot check a few people to try and reduce the risk of people stealing goods.
I don’t know why you have taken this so personally as it is perfectly reasonable by Tesco, in addition when I see someone at the checkout being checked I don’t think that person must be a thief so I also don’t believe you were “humiliated”0 -

I agree there must be measures in progress to deter/prevent theft. I question whether this is an appropriate or proportional one. I don't think anyone is complaining about a spot check (I certainly didn't). I was complaining about a whole rescan. It isn't good enough to say "so don't use it then" because if all or most people were alienated from using it then the supermarket would have to try something else.
I suspect a random check of a number of items periodically plus security protecting expensive items would work perfectly well.
We will regard this system as medieval within five years and indeed Amazon already do!
Not sure how many customers at £100 pw plus £50 petrol they will needs to lose to improve their systems but I'm sure it won't be one!0 -

I have had a full rescan....would it stop me using scan as you go again....no.
It isn't as if that is the only option you have is it. There are still staffed checkouts or scan yourself at till.0 -
I've had a full scan on one occasion and obviously the odd 5 item randomly chosen type scan every now and then.
Doesn't bother me.
Actually the staff were more apologetic for the inconvenience than anything as we unloaded my shopping on any flat space in the vicinity.
More fun with Tesco is that there is some card in my wallet that sets off the entrance security loops every time.
Can be great fun when I walk in and set it off just as someone who is walking out with their shopping and security then race after them as they don't realize it was me.
Tested it with a staff member holding my wallet while I walked back and fro- clean as a whistle - so that is clearly the culprit
Had it set off Waterstone security loop detectors as I was walking in as well.0 -

Of course they have to on occasion do a full scan. The majority of the time they will just do a small number e.g. five items but if they always only ever did five items you could steal items and put them right at the bottom of the bag.
I would expect almost no customers would boycott Tesco because they have been randomly selected for a full scan.0 -

I’m not sure if this is true but someone told me that this can happen when you have more than once contactless card in your wallet. I was also told it means you are open to being defrauded as if the signal is powerful enough to set off an alarm then someone could stand next to you and take a contactless payment off your card with some dubious device!
Again I have no idea if that is true or not but I bought some RFID sleeves from amazon for a quid and this stopped me setting the alarms off!0 -
Surely if you waved each card through the alarm system with each card sperately you could identify which one it was, then maybe wrap it in foil to stop it setting off the alarms in future?I've had a full scan on one occasion and obviously the odd 5 item randomly chosen type scan every now and then.

My local Asda is starting selfscan.
I think, having read this thread, I shall stubbornly stick to tills with staff.
That said, for "just need four things" & for the education of the offspring I should probably try the basted thing.0 -

I’m an ex Tesco employee. So I’m very friendly and known by the staff where I shop.
The checks are purely random but if you do get stopped for a check, they should only scan half a dozen of your items. Not your complete shop. On average, you get checked once for every six or so times you shop. If you normally buy loads of items and only buy a few things you will be checked because you have broken your normal pattern.
I’ve often scanned too many times on an item and had to go back a few days later to get a refund. Customer services have never queried this me and have been happy to oblige.
If you have a clear conscience then it’s really much quicker and easier to use than the main checkouts.0
