Tesco Self Scan

Just been to Tesco for a shop, I always use self scan as it is so much quicker and easier to keep a check on how much you are spending.

When I got to the till it's usually so quick, scan the scanner to the till, pay with credit card, get receipt then walk out. Sometimes I'm selected for a random check of 5 items which I'm happy with as it's quick.

Not tonight, we bought in all over 55 items including heavy things like cans of pop etc. I was selected for a random check. The chap came over and said oh yes, it's a new check where every 5 times you are in Tesco you would be selected for a check - thought this was odd he'd mention it as it's been the case for years.

He took me over to the end of the self scan area which I thought was odd, and then proceeded to re-scan absolutely everything, not just 5 things. As you can imagine this meant taking out all the carefully packed bags and then he attempted to re-pack them (he was pretty useless at this to be honest, no real clue of how to pack). There was no designated area for this to be done and it very cramped. This took another 12 minutes to do, and all the while we were stared at by other shoppers who presumably thought we were shoplifters who had being caught.

Really annoyed at the moment, I'm doing Tescos job by scanning and then they humiliate me in front of other shoppers and re-do what I've already done.

Well you know what to do.

Hint: Lidl is cheaper, they don't have self scan but the checkout is quick and easy . .

It's irritating , but that's the payoff it seems for putting a larger amount through self scan.
Next time you are in you could ask to speak to a manager to see why this happened.

You will just get told its policy.. , to reduce theft and keep costs down. They don't care about the inconvenience or embarrassment caused. That has no pounds shilling and pence value to them although it should as it drives customers away.

    You have 4 choices

Carry on using Tesco but use a manned checkout
Carry on using the self scan
Choose to shop elsewhere eg Aldi/Lidl
    Or shop online at Tesco.com

If you weren't happy you could have just left and not paid.

While I haven't used it for several years (no Tesco near me now) I have had all of my purchases rescanned so it's not something new.

I absolutely refuse to use self scan. The few times I did use it years ago I ended up getting checked on at least 3 occasions (out of about 6) so thought why the hell am I bothering?

Finally, my view is self scan is primarily there to reduce Tesco costs by allowing them to lay off people as not so many check-out assistants are required. It's not as if they give you any discount by doing their work for them..........

So, I do my bit for attaining full employment across the UK by making sure Tesco have to provide a check-out assistant for me to pay for my shopping :D

I thought it was common knowledge that on occasion you may have to have a complete scan, our Tesco told us this when we asked about doing it. They said if it happens it will be done at a checkout and the bags will be repacked for us. It will be a pain if/when it happens but we have been forewarned.

You are not talking about the normal situation in my local one where only 2 out of the 5 checkouts are manned but the customer queue to pay stretches half way up the aisles.

There are normally a few abandoned trolleys or baskets where people have given up and walked out.

Because for every 10 honest shoppers, there are 2 dishonest ones that might (day for example) weigh their steak as ‘onions’ to circumnavigate the system.

It’s not your (or any honest shoppers fault) but a reality of society.
