Hello kissaragi and thanks for your interest in our Fixed Tariffs.

I don't have an exact timeframe yet. Wherever possible, we'll fit SMETS2 smart meters. We're currently averaging over 8000 smart meter installations a week of which about 85% are SMETS2.

There are certain situations where it's not possible to fit SMETS2 right now. For example, we've signal difficulties in some areas north of Manchester. There are also specific metering conditions we're still working on. In these cases, until we've sorted the issues, we'll continue with SMETS1.

Later this year, we'll start to upgrade SMETS1 meters so they're managed in the same way as SMETS2. This includes staying smart after a change of supplier.

We won't be able to guarantee which type of meter is fitted when appointments are made as it depends on the circumstances technicians find when they're on site. Wherever possible, it'll be SMETS2. If not and SMETS1 are needed, as above, we'll do an upgrade later this year. This is done remotely so there's no need for a return visit.

Hope this gives you a bit of an idea kissaragi. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

I thought that the standard equipment was now SMETS2 and arranged an appointment with E.ON on that basis but during the confirmation process I was told that SMETS2 is not available only SMETS1 is on offer. I cancelled the appointment.

I live in the London area and my reasons for wishing to have smart metering are to avoid the need to go into my cellar to read meters (the electricity meter has an array of very small dials half of which run anticlockwise) and to be able to switch easily.

Is this likely to happen this year?

If your meters are in a cellar (as are quite a few peoples in cities) then they are going to find it very difficult to get a radio signal to make the smart part work.

Probably a good test (but no guarantee) would to see if your mobile phone works down there.
  • Thank you. I think that the signal is OK but if it isn’t then nothing can be done about it. What I do want to avoid is being stuck with obsolescent equipment that may eventually be upgraded.

Hello AncientPerson and welcome to the Forums.

We're looking to fit SMETS2 smart meters wherever we can. There are certain situations where this isn't possible right now. We've signalling issues in some areas and there are metering difficulties at individual properties that need sorting.

As we successfully booked an appointment for you, we'll be fairly confident all would be well. We wouldn't, though, be able to guarantee this or the type of meter we would fit until the technician is on site.

There are some circumstances where we're still able to fit SMETS1 smart meters. If we do, later this year, these meters will be upgraded so they can be managed in the same way as SMETS2. This includes being able to change supplier and stay smart. These upgrades will be done remotely and there's no need for a technician to visit.

Sorry I can't be more specific AncientPerson.
